Tying Up Comfort: Elmira College Nursing Club Wraps Kids in Warmth

On Tuesday, November 19, members of the Elmira College Nursing Club sat on the floor and stood around tables in the IDEA Center, using whatever space they could to cut and tie fabric into blankets. Together, the club members made 13 blankets for kids in foster care.

“We’ve done this activity for the last few years and it has become a tradition in our club,” explained Danielle Knapp ’23, President of the EC Nursing Club.

The club used money it raised selling candy bars to buy materials. They bought bright fabrics with fun designs that will be attractive to kids from one to 17 years old. Using a simple design, the students avoid the need for sewing machines. They make the blankets by combining two pieces of fleece, cutting strips along the edges, and then tying the strips together.

“As nursing students, it’s important for us to remember that sometimes people need comfort,” shared Knapp. “That’s what we do with the blankets. These will go to kids so they get a brand new blanket, just for them.”

The blankets will be given to a local children's organization and will be delivered in time for the holidays as part of a larger set of gifts for each child.
