Elmira College Celebrates Tommy Hilfiger's Legacy with Trustee Emeritus Honor

Fashion icon and Elmira native Thomas J. Hilfiger joined the Elmira College Board of Trustees in 1998.Throughout his tenure, he has been a steadfast supporter, offering guidance and insight to the College. More recently, Hilfiger and his family partnered with the College to establish the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School, realizing a shared vision to create a space where a new generation of fashion business professionals can pursue their dreams.

In recognition of Hilfiger’s long-standing dedication to Elmira College, the Board of Trustees recently honored him with the rare status of Trustee Emeritus.

Dr. Charles Lindsay, Elmira College President, presented Hilfiger with a certificate and a purple and gold EC jersey bearing the number 17 and the word “Emeritus” during a recent event in New York City, hosted by Clare van den Blink ’93, the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.

"Tommy’s dedication to Elmira College and its students has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Lindsay. “His generous investment of time, expertise, and guidance has enriched countless lives and strengthened our programs. We are deeply grateful for all he has done to advance the College’s mission.

Among the most notable contributions Hilfiger has made to Elmira College is the time, counsel, and financial support he has given to help students learn about the business side of fashion. The idea for THFBS originated with his siblings, Betsy and Andy Hilfiger, and Tommy’s input helped shape the program. His vision emphasizes a blend of business fundamentals with real-world experience in the fashion industry, preparing students with the knowledge and skills to excel in established businesses or launch their own brands.

Hilfiger initially gifted the college $100,000 to launch the THFBS and also established a $4,000 award to support students’ internship costs. Since then, he and his family have remained closely involved, frequently visiting campus, offering insights as panel speakers, and mentoring students in person.

Additionally, Hilfiger has funded several student trips to New York City, where students have toured museums and met with fashion industry professionals. In the first year of the program, he invited the students to attend New York Fashion Week at the Tommy Factory Fall ‘22 Runway Show, hosted by Tommy Hilfiger (the brand).

Hilfiger and his family also played a pivotal role in establishing an agreement between EC and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), a college of the State University of New York. Graduates of the THFBS can apply to FIT's Global Fashion Management Master's in Professional Studies program.

“Tommy’s generosity in sharing not only his expertise but also his personal journey—both the triumphs and challenges—has provided invaluable lessons to our community. We are deeply grateful for the time and wisdom he’s invested in shaping the next generation of leaders,” shared van den Blink.
