A paper collage called "Mark Twain and his Silhouettes" by Flora Georgiou.
Jan Kather, Instructor of Art at Elmira College, is leading an online gallery project sponsored in partnership with the Center for Mark Twain Studies and Berkeley Commonplace.
Titled, ”Ever the Twain Shall Meet,” the online gallery is open to everyone. To be included, submit a Mark Twain-inspired image that engages in the legacy of Samuel Clemens before September 1.
There are currently 16 pieces by 12 artists featured in the online gallery, including works by Kather and her son, Aaron Kather, EC Assistant Professor of Art.
“Just as Percival Everett’s 2024 novel, James, was created in the spirit of conversation, ‘Ever the Twain Shall Meet’ invites participants to engage with the global legacy of Samuel Clemens by contributing Mark Twain-inspired imagery to this international online collection,” states the project website.
“I was hoping to connect people throughout the world with this online gallery, and I am beginning to see positive results,” explained Kather. “The variety of responses amazes me. For instance, European artist Hesham Malik’s digital art incorporates a more serious text from Mark Twain as part of his design, yet California artist Cheryl Itamura’s video titled Moustache Screen Test gives a modern nod to Twain’s humor that makes me chuckle.”
“I’m looking forward to getting more submissions before the September 1 deadline so they can be included in a compilation video I’m making for the Faculty Art Show in the George Waters Gallery this fall,” she added.
