The Center for Mark Twain Studies announced the winners of its annual elementary school writing contest focused on the fireplace tiles in the Quarry Farm parlor.
The winners of the 2024 Quarry Farm Fireplace Writing Contest are:

Their task was to write a short fable based on one of the tiles that surround a fireplace in the house at Quarry Farm, where Twain and his family summered for more than 20 years and where he penned portions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The tiles feature characters from Aesop’s Fables, a collection of fables written by a slave and storyteller who lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE.
The contest is one of the ways CMTS encourages area elementary school teachers to discuss Mark Twain’s legacy in Elmira and the Southern Tier region of New York State. Students in second grade through sixth grade from schools in a 25-mile radius of Quarry Farm can submit creative writing stories. CMTS invites the student winners and their class to Quarry Farm to read their stories in front of the fireplace, just as Mark Twain did over a century ago.
