Elmira College Will Participate In 2nd Annual Collegiate Pitch Competition on April 27

The second annual Southern Tier Startup Collegiate Competition between SUNY Corning Community College (CCC) and Elmira College will take place from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., April 27, on the CCC campus. The event is a creative small business competition organized by IncubatorWorks in collaboration with EC and CCC.

The competition will be live-streamed on IncubatorWorks’ YouTube channel.

Students with an entrepreneurial focus pitch their grand ideas in a competition that seeks to develop creative solutions to real-world challenges while competing for real-life prizes thanks to the sponsorship from Siemens Energy and Hillard Corporation.

Seven student-led teams of two to six students from cross-disciplinary experiences worked with industry and academic mentors through a business model canvas to help develop their business ideas. The competition will wrap up with the teams’ pre-recorded pitches, which will be judged live by a panel of judges. The winning team will be awarded $5,000, the second-place team $2,500, and the third-place team $1,000. Viewers can vote for their top pick, which will be awarded a $250 Viewer's Choice award.

The startup collegiate competition offers a unique opportunity for students to collaborate, innovate, and develop a business idea that addresses a community problem. It's not just about the prize money but the invaluable experience of turning an idea into a startup pitch. By participating, students can cultivate their entrepreneurial spirit, gain practical business skills, and contribute to the growth of small businesses and young professional retention in Steuben and Chemung County.

At the inaugural event, six EC teams participated. A group of four students called the Bioplastic Collective took third place for their biodegradable straw pitch. Another group of six students called The 6 Hats won Viewer's Choice for their pitch to start an entertainment business in Elmira.
