Attend the Women In Leadership Conference on March 12

On March 12, Elmira College will celebrate Women’s History Month by hosting a Women In Leadership Conference. Free and open to the public, the event will be from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in Stephans Lounge, Meier Hall, on EC’s campus.

Larry Parker, EC Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, coordinated the conference, bringing together women leaders in the Elmira-Corning region.

“This conference builds on EC’s history as the first College to offer women a degree as rigorous as the degrees offered to men at the time,” said Parker. “This is an opportunity for high school students, college students, and young professionals to make professional connections and gain insight and wisdom to help guide their careers. I hope to see this conference grow each year and become a highlight for women and men seeking to further our progress and remove the barriers many women still face in the workplace.”

At the conference, Dr. Elizabeth Lambert, EC Vice President of Campus Life and Dean of Students, will give a presentation about women and higher education. Dr. Mariam Khawar, EC Professor of Economics, will speak about why gender diversity in the corporate world matters.

"Women's History Month allows us to raise awareness and educate our community about the explicit challenges women have faced and are continuing to face regarding gender equality,” shared Lambert. “By highlighting the accomplishments of women in various fields, events like these are designed to inspire and empower others to pursue their dreams and goals.”

The event also includes a panel of five community leaders who will share how they rose to leadership positions. They’ll offer advice for those about to begin a career or for those looking to advance further in their current positions. Panel members include:

  • Michele Johnson MSEd ’11, Senior Manager of Community Impact & Investment Group, Corning Incorporated

  • Emmi Saufley, Owner of Le Kim Fashion and CEO of Runway for a Cause

  • Kathleen Schweizer, Vice President of Swift Glass, Managing Partner of Athlone Racing, and Partner of Longford Farm

  • Talima Aaron, President of the John W. Jones Museum Board of Trustees

  • Anita Lewis MS ’13, Chief Development Officer, Economic Opportunity Program

Dr. Patricia Ireland, EC Provost, will give the closing remarks, and several senior leaders at Elmira College will moderate the event: Ytzel Flores Cristiansen, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life; Paula Lee Hobson, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Alumni Engagement; and Jennifer Swain MS ’19, Vice President of Communications and Marketing.

Schweizer, a panel member, hopes attendees will gain an appreciation for the value of life-long learning and forming bonds with mentors and peer mentors.

“Events like the Elmira College Women in Leadership Conference are important because they give young women, professional women, and men, the chance to listen to and learn from the stories and contrasting experiences of women in leadership roles at Elmira College and the greater Elmira-Corning Region,” she said.
