Corning Incorporated Foundation Provides $20,000 Grant To Elmira College

The Corning Incorporated Foundation granted Elmira College $20,000 to enhance the College's Environmental Science program, a field of growing importance that focuses on the intricacies of the earth’s natural systems.

"We are grateful to the Corning Incorporated Foundation for their support and belief in the importance of our program in environmental sciences," said Dr. Charles Lindsay, president of Elmira College. "Our missions are strongly aligned, and we are excited about this partnership."

"Today's world needs scientists to help address the growing complexity of environmental issues," said Andrea Lynch, president of the Corning Incorporated Foundation. "We are proud to partner with Elmira College as it prepares students for this vital and meaningful career."

"This money will enhance our ability to provide an excellent education to our students, which in turn, will help build future leaders in the field of environmental sustainability," said Dr. Patricia Ireland, Elmira College Provost. "The challenges and complexity of climate change demand innovation and we want to give our students every advantage to be their best and lead in the professional world."

The grant money allows the College to continue work started in 2021 with another grant provided by the Foundation. EC will purchase equipment for Environmental Science courses and student research, providing additional hands-on experiences for students and deepening their understanding of the natural world. Specifically, EC will purchase writing boards, phone cases, dive lights, and snorkel gear that students can use to collect data while snorkeling or in the water. The students can then connect those field processes and the data they collect with digital maps they make and study in the lab. This will have many applications, including giving them visibility into how increased runoff and peak flows, caused by development, impacts ecosystem health in the ocean, rivers, and lakes.

Additional equipment purchases include items to collect sediment cores in lakes locally and in the ocean when students travel to St. John Virgin Islands during EC’s unique Term III travel experiences. The students can use precision analytical tools, such as a handheld XRF, to scan sediment cores non-destructively and provide a detailed analysis of metals in the cores. This will help them track how contaminants are transported and observe the ecosystem health in marine environments.

"In a world of increasing environmental issues, we need more professionals that can solve problems as well as advisors and citizens that can understand and interpret them," said Trevor Browning, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science. "These funds will give us the tools to connect the theory taught in class with practical application in the laboratory and field to better establish these skills with our graduates. We are very excited to begin using these tools to engage our students in and out of the classroom."
