Admissions
Looking for a small, close-knit campus filled with incredible, hands-on learning opportunities? Our Admissions Office can help make Elmira College YOUR place.
Elmira College will roll out a new online Master’s in Education program to help the growing demand for special education teachers. The MSEd: Inclusive Special Education (All Grades) program will give recent education graduates and current teachers a flexible way to learn how to create safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environments from highly qualified instructors.
Students can begin the 12-month program when it launches in December 2023, or with the next cohort in June 2024.
“This online program will provide students the flexibility to take classes at home yet receive the individualized attention from our faculty that Elmira College is known for,” said Alexis Rittenberger, Assistant Professor, Director of Graduate and Professional Studies, Interim Director of Teacher Ed. “We also emphasize experiential learning, requiring 34 hours in a field-based practicum placement, which students can complete in their local area.”
The program is founded on research-based instructional strategies and innovative ways to apply knowledge and skills, including assessing student growth and finding compelling ways to help students with additional needs learn and thrive. It also teaches future educators how to advocate for students with disabilities and learning differences.
The program prepares students for the New York State certification process for teaching students with disabilities, an area projected to grow in need over the next decade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of special education teachers will grow 8% from 2020 to 2030. Locally, teachers are in high demand, and 100% of EC’s recent graduate education program students have found full-time teaching positions. A search for available special education teacher roles within a 50-mile radius of Elmira on the digital job board, Indeed, resulted in 35 job listings.
“This program, which builds on EC’s well-respected education programs, leverages the expertise of our faculty,” said Patricia Ireland, Elmira College Provost. “It is part of our strategy to build career pathways responsive to students' interests while also meeting the needs of employers locally and nationally.”
The MSEd in Inclusive Special Education is open to current teachers and recent graduates who have their teaching certification or whose certification is pending. The certification can be in any content area. Click here to learn more about the program and how to apply.
