With announced closure, learn how EC can help.arrow

Elmira native and fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger and several of his siblings, including Betsy, Andy, and Ginny Hilfiger, provided Elmira College students an opportunity to benefit from the family’s extensive knowledge and experience in the fashion industry during a recent visit to the College. While on campus, the fashion professionals shared industry insights in a roundtable discussion with students from the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School (THFBS) and participated in a campus-wide meet and greet with additional students, faculty, and staff.

Their visit demonstrates the family’s belief in learning about the fashion business from people in the industry.

“I think it’s important to have a personal connection with the students,” explained Tommy Hilfiger. “In class, they may not hear the stories and in-depth thought processes like we discussed today.”

Hilfiger and his family have frequently offered their time since the program began in the fall of 2022. Tommy Hilfiger sponsored the students' travel to New York City three times, including to The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tommy Factory Fall ‘22 Runway Show, hosted by Tommy Hilfiger (the company), which is owned by PVH Corp. The family also joined two virtual fashion-industry panel discussions in the spring.

“Being able to talk to a professional in the field gives you insight into aspects of the profession that you can’t learn elsewhere,” agreed Jazmine Elliott '26, a THFBS student. “Throughout the day we were able to look into the minds of the experts, including Tommy’s siblings who all have their own careers and so many perspectives.”

Elliott was able to get one-on-one time with Tommy Hilfiger, interviewing him for a video about the family’s visit to the campus and the THFBS program

“I was nervous and excited about interviewing Tommy,” Elliott shared after the event. “I was impressed with how easily he answered the questions, that is a real skill.”

At the roundtable discussion, about 25 students in the THFBS program engaged directly with the family, asking many questions and listening as each family member shared about their areas of expertise. Ginny Hilfiger spoke about her career path and becoming Co-founder and Chief Design Officer of the fashion branding company MGO Global and Creative Director for The Messi Store, a brand centered around professional footballer (soccer) and World Cup champion Lionel Messi. Several students asked her about working with Messi and how to market someone with global fame.

Andy Hilfiger, Creative Director and namesake of Andrew Charles, a rock 'n' roll-inspired fashion line, shared stories about combining his love of fashion and his love of music while working with his brother at Tommy Hilfiger. A musician himself, Andy Hilfiger identified young artists to wear Tommy Hilfiger-branded clothing, often spotting their talent before they rose to mega-stardom. He shared how he noticed Brittany Spears and signed a contract with her just before she shot up to number one on the charts. Andy and Tommy Hilfiger told the story of meeting Beyoncé when she was in the band Destiny’s Child and Andy and Betsy Hilfiger described helping develop the JLO by Jennifer Lopez brand and then launching the fragrance Glow by J.Lo.

“If you know about the fashion industry, there is a natural transition to the fragrance and beauty industries,” Andy Hilfiger told the students.

“Having this kind of program when I was younger would have meant everything to me,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “It would have given me a lot of business acumen I never received until I was forced to learn it on my own.”

After the roundtable discussion, Stephans Lounge filled with students, faculty, and staff from across campus, with many student-athletes arriving in their team uniforms. The EC Cheerleading Team chanted as the family walked into the room. After a few words from Dr. Charles Lindsey, EC President, Tommy Hilfiger took questions from the crowd. When a student asked for the best way to become a fashion model, Hilfiger replied with a wry grin, “The best way to get into the fashion industry is to enroll in the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School.” Everyone cheered.

“Growing up in Elmira, I always looked at Elmira College as an impressive institution,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “What I didn’t realize was that someday I would be able to create my own program here. And that makes me very proud.”
