Elmira College students in the newly established Feminists who want to Fight for Inclusivity, Gender, Humanity, and Transparency (F.I.G.H.T.) Club and Women's and Gender Studies Program recently revived a performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues.

The students performed the play, which is composed of a series of monologues that explore various aspects of female sexuality and the female experience, on Sunday, April 2.

Emma Henault ’25, F.I.G.H.T. Club President, revived the once annually performed play that was put on pause due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Henault, with the help of Martha Easton, Assistant Professor of Sociology, secured funding for the rights to perform the play. She also enlisted help from Jan Kather, Media Artist and veteran Vagina Monologues performer.

Together Henault and Kather put together a cast and tapped Madison Morton ’24, Psychology Major, to direct.

Nearly 50 students, faculty, staff, family, and friends attended the performance. According to Kather, the audience laughed, groaned, gasped, hooted, and gave the cast a standing ovation. Audience comments ranged from a young man confessing, "I was surprised! I learned a lot," to several young women asking, "How can I be part of this next year?"

“We built a strong sense of sisterhood, tapping into the long history of women performing this important play on the Elmira College campus,” said Kather. “Look for it to be performed again next year!”
