Accepted Student Recognition Day 4/6/24 arrow

Elmira College students are helping to raise funds to support the mental and physical well-being of area veterans. The students are planning a 5k run and a car wash. Proceeds from the events will be used to secure companion and service dogs in a program known as Get A Vet A Pet.

“These are great events that raise money to fill a needed void in the veteran community,” said Kevin Loukopoulous, Chairman of the Chemung County Veterans Council.

Emma Clegg ’23, a Psychology major, is helping to organize the fundraising events as part of her community service requirement.

“This has been a great opportunity for me to get involved in the community,” she said. “I’ve met great people and am developing new skills. The involvement of other Elmira College students has aided immensely in the success of planning these events. We hope the community will join us on May 21 for a fun-filled day! We look forward to seeing everyone!”

The Get A Vet A Pet 5K Run is on Sunday, May 21 in Eldridge Park. Clegg said she is looking for both runners and event volunteers. Everyone, including students, faculty, employees, alumni, and community members, is invited to participate and there will be food, yard games, and music. Registration costs $30 and runners must sign up by May 15. Volunteers interested in helping run the event can email petsforvets5k@gmail.com.
