At Elmira College, many of our students form lasting friendships that last well beyond graduation. Sometimes, those relationships go beyond friendship. For example, EC’s Alumna and Volunteer Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach, Rachel Vespucci ’19, and Alumnus and Assistant Baseball Coach, Jack Donnelly ’19, got engaged during the recent Athletics Alumni Reunion Weekend. The two are now looking forward to getting married next year.

Vespucci and Donnelly were Education majors and met in their first year at Elmira during Term III fieldwork. They began dating in their second year.

“We had a night class together and Jack would walk me back to my dorm every night after class,” said Vespucci. “He went to all of my basketball games. It was not until the basketball season was over that I realized Jack wasn’t going anywhere and that I liked him!”

After the couple graduated they continued dating but lived in different locations. Donnelly stayed in Elmira and began working at the same school where he completed his student teaching experience, the Alternative School for Math and Science in Corning, New York. Vespucci moved to Cooperstown, New York. After three years, Vespucci moved to Elmira to be with Donnelly and began working at the Frederick Carder Elementary School in Corning.

Last year, when Donnelly began a master’s degree at Elmira College, the Head Men’s Baseball Coach reached out and asked if Donnelly could help the team. He said yes and became an Assistant Coach.

“I was loving it,” said Donnelly.

Vespucci, too, decided to volunteer and assist the Women’s Basketball Team.

“Since Jack had been helping out with baseball, the basketball coach caught wind that I was in the area and reached out. I was at first hesitant as I would be starting a new job and finishing my graduate experience. However, I fell in love with helping out the basketball team and look forward to next year as I can focus more on helping the team out.”

With everything going well, Donnelly decided to propose and wanted to include friends and family. He decided to take advantage of Athletics Reunion Weekend, a time when many of the couple’s friends would be back on the Elmira College campus. His plan was to propose in front of the campus clock tower and had friends and family hide in the Campus Center.

“We didn’t quite make it to the clock, she figured it out,” Donnelly said, adding that she was still surprised.

“I was so surprised!” exclaimed Vespucci. “I still am surprised! I couldn’t believe the moment was happening. I am so happy it happened the way it did because Jack and I truly developed friendships that will last a lifetime and I am just so happy I got to share this momentous occasion with our friends!”

As Vespucci and Donnelly begin to plan for their wedding, they expressed an appreciation for the role Elmira College has played in their lives.

“Jack and I are both so fortunate to have received an amazing education and many experiences from Elmira College,” said Vespucci. “We both graduated with high honors, got jobs right out of college, and are continuing to further our careers. Elmira provided us with so many opportunities that prepared us for the real world. Most importantly it gave us our family. As mentioned, the friends we gained at EC are truly one of a kind that we love dearly. The small-knit community was so special to be a part of and we would do it all over again!”

“Elmira College brought us really good friends, brought us together, and brought us back for coaching,” said Donnelly. “That’s why I proposed at EC, since that is where it all started. It’s one of my favorite places and we want to do what we can to make it better and better for future generations.”
