Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Elmira College started developing a plan to renew itself and build a bridge from its traditional liberal arts programs to one that more fully blends the liberal arts, professional programs, and the College’s history of hands-on, immersive learning.

Over the past two years, College administration has worked with the New York State Charities Bureau to create a path that will allow the College to access the necessary additional resources from the endowment to fund the plan and thereby navigate the College through current financial challenges, including the downturn in enrollment and the economic upheaval caused by the coronavirus.

The Charities Bureau, which is the NY agency responsible for overseeing all NYS charitable organizations, reviewed the College’s plan and has indicated that as required for such actions under law, the College may now submit a petition to the Supreme Court. The petition includes background information on the College’s situation, steps the College has taken in reaction to the situation, and a detailed narrative and financial plan for moving forward. Once approved by the court, the College, with the oversight of the Charities Bureau, will be able to access the necessary funds for the plan over the course of the next five years. These funds will be borrowed from the endowment and paid back on a set schedule.

While long and arduous, these actions represent an investment in the College's future and provide a clear strategy for moving the institution forward. As the strategic planning process for 2023-2028 begins, these goals will be woven into every aspect of the College’s operations. Continued support from alumni, family, and friends will remain critical for the College’s future vitality.
