Elmira College media artist Jan Kather was asked to judge an online photo competition sponsored by the State of the Art Gallery Ithaca. The ten winning entries, along with Kather's explanations for why she chose the images, are available to view on the State of the Art Gallery Ithaca Featured Show page through the month of June.

"With such a strong presentation of work, this task was not easy," wrote Kather as part of her review. "At the end of the day, this process is akin to choosing the Red Delicious over the Macintosh apple: personal taste and experience guide the rationale, with the caveat that both are delightful, and on any given day, I just might prefer one over the other."

According to the State of the Art Gallery Ithaca, the winners will each receive $100. The contestants included a mix of local, regional and national photography, with landscape, portrait, street photo, and abstract submissions. This was the first time in the show's 32-year history that it was open to photographers nationwide.
