Dierckx Delves Into Archeological DigDr. Heidi Dierckx, professor of classical civilizations, is a senior member of an archeological field team working on a dig on the acropolis of Lamia in north-central Greece. The team is hoping to find Mycenaean (Bronze Age) remains of a possible palace on the acropolis, which would have dominated the plain below during the Bronze Age.

Dierckx, who supervises undergraduate and graduate students from Greek and American universities on the dig site, credits her participation with keeping her classroom material fresh.

"Being an archaeologist, I always enjoy teaching students archaeological excavation methodology, which involves not only excavation but also writing notes and an eventual report, so that no information gets lost," said Dierckx. "My work in field archaeology and research keeps me active in the field and keeps the material I teach up to date."

During the dig, the team excavated several levels of later-date, Turkish to Roman-Byzantine, remains in order to reach the bedrock. At the bottom of the trench, a wall, of probable Mycenaean-date, was discovered.

Mag24, a Greek online magazine, featured the dig in a July 2019 article, which includes photos of the dig along with video interviews with Nikos Stavrogiannis, mayor of Lamia, and Dr. Christofilis Maggidis, president of the Mycenaean Foundation.
