Seybold Co-Edits Special Issue of American Literary History

Dr. Matt Seybold, assistant professor of American Literature & Mark Twain Studies, recently co-edited a special issue of American Literary History.

The special issue is organized around the topic of "Economics & American Literary Studies in the New Gilded Age." It features nine essays, three commentaries, and four book reviews, all considering questions related to the relationship between economic thought and literary production in the United States.

Seybold edited the issue with ALH lead editor, Gordon Hutner, of the University of Illinois. In his introduction, Seybold considers recent attempts by the Nobel Prize-winning economist, Robert Shiller, to integrate the analysis of narrative into behavioral economic theory. In his findings, Seybold claims that this "supposedly trailblazing foray in narrative economics provokes a troubling question. Forget collaboration. Can English and Economics even coexist?"
