Elmira College’s Theatre Program opens the 2024-2025 season with a wild ride down the Colorado River. Men on Boats is a satirical take on the 1869 John Wesley Powell expedition. Playwright Jacklyn Backhaus upends traditional casting by requiring all 13 male characters to be played by 10 actors who identify as women or non-binary. The play is action-packed as the crews of four boats endure the brutal conditions of the river, suffering overturned boats, lost provisions, and the haunting specter of what Powell called “The Great Unknown.”
The cast is made up of Elmira College students Asher Askins '28, T.J. Boyd '28, Jinx Hill '28, Ash Indelicato '28, Joyanna Lynn '27, Lee Maras '27, Mia Pavon '26, Piper Phillips '28, and Zoe Slater '28. Also joining the cast is local high school student Neo Spiering.
The play is directed by Elmira College Theatre’s new Program Director, Sarah K. Chalmers, and the stage manager is first-year EC student, Quinn Wilson '28. The production is designed by Kyle Artone (set and costumes), Scott McGuire (lighting), Kaylara Allington (sound), and Finch Hartwick '27 (props). Filomena Jack is the Costume Shop Coordinator and Graphic Designer for the show.r
