A broadly-based education in the liberal arts and sciences is great preparation for a career in the law. Thus, completing any major at Elmira College will prepare the prospective attorney for success; it is important to emphasize on one's choice of courses those that stress strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills as well as one’s passions. At Elmira College, such majors include (among others) Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, History, English, Economics, and Political Science.
Please note, for students interested in pursuing a career in patent law, they must major in a “hard science” such as chemistry, biology, etc. in order to be eligible to take the patent law bar examination.
Elmira College also boasts an active pre-law student organization – Pre-Law Student Association – which meets regularly and, in addition to providing a fun social environment, provides assistance in Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) preparation, law school application assistance, financial aid planning, and entertains guest speakers, including attorneys and judges from the region as well as law school recruiters. Elmira College is also one of a handful of undergraduate school in the nation with a chapter of Phi Delta Phi – the oldest legal honors society in the country. In addition, the Pre-Law Society sponsors the Elmira College Mock Trial Team which is comprised of any interested student (Freshman through Seniors) from any major with any future plans.
It is wise to seek pre-law counseling shortly after starting the freshman year from the Pre-Law Advisor, Dr. Daniel N. Clay. He can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
