History Curriculum

History majors complete twelve history courses with some exposure to each of the three large culture areas - the United States, Europe and the non-Western world. This leaves the student considerable latitude for courses in related areas, such as Political Science or Anthropology.

While many young historians pursue graduate degrees, a history major can offer a surprising variety of employment possibilities. Probably no major prepares graduates more effectively for law school, and evidence suggests a heightened need for teachers. The research and writing skills emphasized in the history major provide an excellent preparation for aspiring journalists and writers. Museum work, theological studies, government and even business and industry, attract innumerable historians.

Completion of the History major, in conjunction with the appropriate other courses, can be used to satisfy the requirements for certification in Social Studies at the adolescence and middle school level.
