Professional Development Options

The Office of Continuing Education and Graduate Studies offers non-credit professional development courses and certificates designed to assist working professionals in strengthening job skills and meeting continuing education requirements. These include prep courses for certain industry-specific certifications. Our office also offers students a chance to take a class or two for personal or professional enrichment without enrolling in a full degree program.


Society for Human Resource Management Exam Prep

The global HR credentials through the Society for Human Resource ManagementSHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP, offer growth, advancement and recognition. This intensive 10-week program combines expert instruction with the 2018 SHRM Learning System®, so you will learn faster, retain more knowledge and stay on track for success on the exam.


Online Non-Credit Courses and Certificates

These online learning courses and certificates are offered through partnerships with providers such as Health Ed Today and Ed2Go.  They are provided by expert instructors and students can participate anytime, day or evening, from any computer.  Many courses are available as either a single, stand-alone class or as part of a certificate program.


Non-Degree Study and Auditing Courses

You may take classes at Elmira College without officially applying for an undergraduate or graduate degree.  If, at a later time, you decide to pursue a degree, these classes may be applied towards a degree program. For graduate coursework, only 12 credits of non-degree courses may be matriculated to a degree program.

Students may audit a course with the consent of the instructor.  An auditor is expected to attend classes, complete the assignments, and participate in class discussions, but is not required to take examinations.  No credit is given for an audited course. The Certificate Program in Supply Chain Management

(Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

The model of supply chain management is based on the idea that almost every product that reaches an end-user represents the collective efforts of numerous organizations. These organizations are referred to together as the supply chain.

Supply chain management (SCM) is a systematic approach to managing the flow of materials through every phase including product development, sourcing, production span functions, and logistics, as well as how to manage the information to coordinate these activities.

About the program:

This five-course certificate program will provide the concepts, processes, and strategies used in SCM to increase efficiency, reduce costs, facilitate a competitive infrastructure, improve customer service, and develop collaboration between suppliers and business.

Improving Nursing Quality Indicators

The Improving Nursing Quality Indicators course utilizes the principles and methods of Lean Six Sigma to teach a problem-solving tool set that is appropriate for the individual nurse, nursing units, or healthcare organizations who could greatly benefit from the analytical tools and methods used in Six Sigma.

What you will learn:

The learning objective of the Improving Nursing Quality Indicators course is to develop a comprehensive set of skills that will allow you to improve on all of the quality indicators within a nursing function. The Improving Nursing Quality Indicators body of knowledge includes techniques for both quantitative and non-quantitative analysis, as well as the team leadership skills necessary to get projects across the goal line.

Meet your instructor, Vickie Kamataris.

Vickie is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has been applying Six Sigma processes in the US and abroad to healthcare since 1996. Her expertise includes Theory of Constraints, TRIZ, and Change Management. A registered nurse with more than twenty years of clinical experience, Vickie earned her BSN from Southwestern College where she graduated valedictorian in 1988 and a MSN/HCSM from Loyola University, New Orleans. Vickie has achieved multiple specialty certifications, including CPHQ and COHN-S. She served as director of commercial healthcare and MBB for military healthcare for NOVACES, LLC, a leading international provider of SystemCPI consulting services.

She is a co-author of “Performance Improvement for Healthcare: Leading Change with Lean, Six Sigma, and Constraints Management,” published in 2012. She has also published numerous quality-related articles and presented at national and international venues.

Vickie is currently a visiting professor in leadership for the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.


Foundations of Project Management

The classroom experience without the classroom!

Elmira College’s Foundations of Project Management course is truly a virtual classroom with synchronous (real-time) lectures and interactions for all participants in the course. You’ll work together with your instructor and classmates while you’re at home, the office, a coffee shop…anywhere but a classroom.

Class Overview

Project management skills are essential in a wide variety of professional roles, and can even be a wonderful asset in your personal life.

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of project management, approaching it from the standpoint of managing a single, stand-alone project that is small to medium-sized. You'll work through the project life cycle using the same steps you'll use when you're managing a real project.
