The academic advising program at Elmira College is designed to assist students in developing and clarifying their educational plans and career goals and to assist them in fulfilling degree requirements. The program also seeks to increase student awareness of the educational opportunities and support programs available through the College.

Roles and Responsibilities

The faculty at Elmira College views the advisor-advisee relationship as a developmental one, whereby students are encouraged to assume greater and greater responsibility for their academic programs. Advisors employ a more prescriptive approach to advising during freshman year. Once a student declares a major, the advisor focuses on assisting the student in developing academic and career plans related to her/his major. Academic advisors also seek to support students’ personal growth, as mentioned in the College’s mission statement. Every effort is made to place incoming students with an advisor from an academic program related to a student’s intended major. While the ultimate responsibility for meeting degree requirements rests with the individual student, academic advisors provide guidance and support to students in fulfilling these prerequisites and for helping to translate their academic plans into course preferences.
