The Elmira College Theatre Program begins its 2017-2018 season with Barbara Lebow’s touching drama, A Shayna Maidel. Performances are scheduled September 14 through 16 at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee September 17 at 2:00 p.m. in Gibson Theatre at Elmira College.

The setting of the play is the Manhattan apartment of Rose Weiss in 1946. Although born in Poland, Rose (who came to the United States with her father, Mordechai, at the age of four) is now a completely modern American young woman. The family intent had been for Rose's mother and sister, Lusia, to join the others, but Lusia fell ill with scarlet fever, Mama stayed on to care for her, and soon the rise of the Nazis throughout Europe cut off their escape. Their ordeal in the concentration camps, which only Lusia survived, has brought a burden of guilt to the aging Mordechai. Now he and Rose await the arrival of his elder daughter, Lusia, who has, at last, found her way to America.

The New York Times called the play “a tribute to the sustaining power of family and to man’s indomitability.” Others raved “It’s an emotional powerhouse of almost overwhelming proportions” suggesting “anyone who sees it will not soon forget it.”

Featured in the Elmira College cast are Victoria Juliano as Rose, Rachel Leben as Lusia, Nathan Edwards as Mordechai, El Hoodak as Mama, Trevor Stone as Duvid, and Audrey Duarte as Hannah. The production is directed by John J. Kelly, who also provides scenic design. George de Falussy designs both lighting and sound. Technical Direction is by Scott McGuire, with Julie Salinero and Rebecca Cook serving as Stage Managers.

All Elmira College Theatre productions are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances begin at 8:00 p.m., with matinees at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
