This week’s #SoaringToSuccess hits the rink to spotlight alumnus, Keith Cummings ’16. While Keith was a student studying business administration with a concentration in marketing, he had the opportunity to intern with the Elmira Jackal’s hockey team. Little did he know that this internship would be the start to his career with the Colorado Avalanche, a National Hockey League (NHL) team.

Let’s drop the puck and learn more from Keith…

Keith Cummings

I transferred to Elmira College my junior year and was unsure about my future. After working with advisors and meeting a few professors, I decided to pursue my studies in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Shortly after my first week on campus, I was fortunate to land an internship with the Elmira Jackals, a local hockey team and minor-league affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres.

The Jackals allowed me to explore the sports industry on multiple levels such as sales, game operations, video and camera operating, and management. I started as an inside sales representative and game operations intern.

After graduating from Elmira College, I was hired as a full-time employee as an account executive in corporate sales and manager of game operations. I quickly started working with businesses and C-Level executives to help them utilize First Arena as a business tool. I also served as a member of the Jackals front office for three years.

Today, I am an account executive in business development with the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL. I specialize in working with businesses across the Denver metropolitan area to help them utilize Avalanche tickets and the Pepsi Center to reach company goals.

My first class at Elmira College was business-to-business marketing and it turned out to be the foundation of my career!
