The end of the summer season is upon us and our students are hard at work completing internships. This week our #SoaringToSuccess series spotlights biology major, Zoey Perham '18. Zoey went from on-campus science labs to a healthcare-focused lab at the nearby Arnot Ogden Medical Center.

Let’s grab a lab coat and learn more from Zoey…

Soaring to Success Spotlight Zoey Perham

I have spent the summer working at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in the laboratory, right here in Elmira. My responsibilities include receiving specimens into the lab, transporting specimens, and delivering specimens to the different departments within the lab for testing. The lab is large, and there are many different tests performed.

I have learned about all the different departments and I have been able to see many interesting things. I was recently trained in phlebotomy, so I have also spent time working in outpatient blood drawing.

This has been such a positive experience for me. I have had the opportunity to work under many people who have taught me a great deal about the healthcare field. I have been able to work directly with patients in phlebotomy, so I have learned about patient interaction and the importance of patience and friendliness.

This internship experience has prepared me for my future in the medical field, as my knowledge of the healthcare industry has grown. I feel that I learn more every day, and this has shown me that I made the right choice to enter the healthcare field after I graduate.
