As the summer blazes on, our #SoaringToSuccess series continues to spotlight the internships our students are completing this season. This week features, Mikaela Buntz ’18 a chemistry major with a pre-pharmacy concentration. She is beginning her career with an internship at Old Forge Pharmacy, a locally owned pharmacy in Old Forge, Pennsylvania.

Let’s get behind the counter and learn more from Mikaela…

Mikaela Buntz at her internship at the Old Forge Pharmacy

I began my internship search a few months ago by researching whether a chain pharmacy, a locally owned pharmacy, or a pharmacy within a hospital would be the best fit for me. I decided to focus on the locally owned pharmacies to gain a more hands-on experience. With the help from Career Services, I perfected my resume, interviewed, and was hired as a summer intern by the owners, Jon and Lori Slocum.

Each day at the pharmacy, I assist the pharmacists with several tasks including unpacking, labeling, and putting the morning shipment away, organizing and assisting with refills, and providing customer service over the telephone and in person. By assisting the pharmacists and through conversations with customers, I have learned more about the pharmacy industry than I had expected.

I am also gaining an insight of how to run a retail pharmacy. In the retail area, I help prepare the store for open and close, organize and position products on the shelves, and assist customers with their purchases.

I am grateful to be spending the summer interning at Old Forge Pharmacy. Each day I am gaining and building upon my pharmacy experience. This internship allows me to support the community, while learning about the day-to-day functions of a pharmacy. Every day at Old Forge Pharmacy validates that I have chosen a health care field that is the perfect fit for me.
