W.W. Norton & Co recently held the Norton Anthology 2012 Student Recitation Contest, and an Elmira College student was honored as one of the six contest winners. Amy Schmidt ’15 of Batavia, NY is an International Studies major with a Spanish minor. The video was part of an assignment for her “Craft of Writing Poetry” class, taught by MaryJo Mahoney, Associate Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at Elmira College.

As stated on the W.W. Norton & Company website, “In Fall 2012, high school and college students worldwide were invited to submit original online video recitations of a work from the Norton Anthologies. Finalists were selected for each of the works by W. W. Norton & Company editors.” There are six categories in the competition, and Amy’s submission was of the poem “A Bird, came down to the Walk” by Emily Dickinson.

Amy explains that while she started the video as an assignment, she was very enthusiastic about it and learned a lot from this experience. “I began this project as a requirement for one of my courses, but creating the recitation video ended up being very fun and even educational.” Making the video helped her in class, and even sparked an interest in poetry for her. “I enjoyed brainstorming a creative way to film my recitation. Overall, the contest has allowed me to realize my love for poetry!”

Amy’s video will be featured on the W.W. Norton Anthology Web Page, and her name will appear in the acknowledgements of the Norton Anthology of World Literature. She will also receive a $150 gift card to Barnes and Noble.
