Google Apps at Elmira College

All students receive a Google Apps at Elmira College (GAEC) account that includes Gmail, Calendar, Drive (storage), Docs (Web-based word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs), and Sites. Gmail is ad-free, provides virtually unlimited storage for archiving messages, attachments, and Drive documents.Google's powerful spam filters significantly reduces spam and junk messages to allow you to more efficiently manage your mail. Your GAEC e-mail address (e.g. mtwain19@elmira.edu) belongs to you through and after graduation. Information Technology offers tutorials, workshops, and training sessions to help students maximize their use of Google Apps.

Log on to gmail.com with your @elmira.edu address to access your email and other Google Apps!

Gmail

One of the benefits of being an Elmira College student is Email For Life. Students will retain their Elmira College email account upon graduating, allowing them access to their Gmail account for life. Information Technology staff does not ask for or provide password and account information via email. It is also important to note that all email sent by Information Technology staff will always contain the name of the person sending the email. If you need assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk.

Canvas

Canvas is our online learning platform. Here is where your professors will post the syllabus, assignments and submission drop boxes for both online and in person classes. You are able to log into Canvas using your Elmira College credentials only after you have registered for classes.

Microsoft Office 365 for Students

Current students at Elmira College can sign up for Office 365 Education for free, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools. All you need is to log in with your valid @elmira.edu email address to get started.

You are able to download the apps on up to 5 devices and will have access until you graduate!

Lockdown Browser®

LockDown Browser® is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system by securing online exams in classrooms or proctored environments. This is only a required download if your professor indicates the test uses this software*.

If you have a Chromebook, follow the below instructions:

  1. Log into the Chromebook and start Google Chrome
  2. Log into Canvas and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser
  3. Select the link for downloading and installing LockDown Browser
  4. From the Chrome web store, select "Add to Chrome" to install the LockDown Browser Extension
    • Note: During the beta, this extension will only work with quizzes an instructor has enabled for use with LockDown Browser for Chromebook. It is your responsibility to let your instructors know if you are using a Chromebook.

25Live

25Live allows you to reserve spaces on campus for events such as study groups, club meetings, or campus events. This prevents scheduling conflicts with classes or other events. Directions on how to reserve a room can be found on 25Live.

Minitab and Minitab Express

You will be required to log on with your Elmira College Google Account once you click any of the installation links below. Once you click a link your name and email address will be collected by Information Technology as part of our license agreement with Minitab. The software that you download and install on your personal computer is for your use only and may not be distributed.

The current version of Minitab for Windows is 19. There is no Macintosh version for regular Minitab. The current version of Minitab Express for Macintosh or Windows is 1.5.

Minitab and Minitab Express are available for Elmira College students and Faculty for home use to download using the links below.

NOTE: This license expires at the end of June each year. Students and Faculty will need to check back after June for an updated version of the software that will include a new license file. The installers and license file on this web page are set to expire at the end of the current academic year.

*By clicking the following link to download Minitab 19, you agree not to distribute this software.

  1. Download Minitab 19 for Windows installer package, which is stored as a Zip archive.
  2. Follow these steps to extract the Zip archive and run the installer:
    1. Right-click the installer archive and select Extract All. You will be prompted to pick a location to save the files. We recommend that you choose the Desktop, then create a new folder called "Minitab" on the Desktop.
    2. In that folder, you will find minitabxx.x.x.x0setup.x64.exe. Double-click to open the executable.
    3. Follow the steps on the screen.
    4. When you come to the screen "How do you want to activate the software?", select Activate with a License, then click Next.
    5. Select File, then Browse.
    6. Browse to the license file for minitab.lic, which you previously saved to your desktop in the Minitab folder.
    7. Continue to follow the prompts on the screen, selecting Install. The installation will take several minutes to complete.
    8. After a successful installation, you will see "Completed Minitab XX Setup." Click Close.

You will have a new Minitab shortcut on your desktop.

  1. Download Minitab Express 1.5 for Macintosh installer package, which is stored as a Zip archive. We recommend that you choose the Desktop, then create a new folder called "Minitab" on the Desktop.
  2. Follow these steps to locate and check out the license file:
    1. Double-click the installer archive to create a new folder at the same location and to extract the installation files.
    2. Inside the new folder, find the file named Minitab.vxx.x.x.x.Commercial.pkg. Double-click to run the installer.
    3. The installer will run. Depending on your Mac's settings, you may be asked to enter your macOS user name and password.
    4. When prompted for an Activation Type, select License File. The name of the license file (minitab.lic) should already be in the text box.
    5. Click Browse.
    6. Browse to the license file location on your desktop. Select it and click Open.
    7. Click Continue, then click Install. The installation will take several minutes to complete.
    8. If prompted for any options, we recommend choosing the default settings. Depending on your Mac's settings, you may be prompted to enter the username and password of a macOS user account with Administrator-level privileges.
    9. After a successful installation, you will see "The installation was successful." Click Close.

Your new Minitab installation will be in the Applications folder.

Register a Device

In order to connect to EC_Wireless, your device must be registered. Laptops and phones should automatically prompt you to sign in using your Elmira College credentials once you try to connect to the EC_Wireless network. All other devices (smart TVs, Roku, gaming systems, Amazon Echos, etc.), however, must be registered manually. You can do this using the purple "Register a Device" button found on the right-hand side of this page.

If you continue to experience issues, please email your device's Mac address to helpdesk@elmira.edu and IT will assist you. The Mac address for most devices can be found under Network settings. For more specific instructions, Google has directions for every type of device.

Please note that wireless printers are not compatible with our network and wireless routers are prohibited.

Elmira College students should always be connecting to the EC_Wireless network, not our Guest network.

Password Reset

To recall or reset your Elmira College password, go to ecpasswordreset.elmira.edu. You may use your current password or the "forgot password" option to reset. If you continue to experience issues, please contact our IT Help Desk for assistance at helpdesk@elmira.edu.

Emergency Alert

Our E2 Campus system sends alerts and notifications from our Campus Security office directly to your cell phone. Sign up using the "Emergency Alert Sign-Up" button located on the right-hand side of this page.

You will need to re-activate your E2 Campus account annually in order to continue receiving text alerts.
