What if I want to add or drop a course?

Adding Courses

  • A student may add term-long courses during Fall and Winter Terms:
    • through the first week of classes with the approval of the advisor;
    • through the second week of classes with the approval of the advisor and the course instructor;
    • after the second week of classes only if unusual circumstances necessitate it. Approval of the advisor, course instructor, and the Dean of Faculty is required.
  • A student may add term-long courses during Spring and Summer Terms and six-week courses during Fall and Winter Terms:
    • through the first three days of classes with the approval of the advisor;
    • through the first week of classes with the approval of the advisor and the course instructor;
    • after the first week of classes only if unusual circumstances necessitate it. Approval of the advisor, course instructor, and the Dean of Faculty is required.
Dropping Courses
Students may drop courses with advisor approval at any time during the first week of the term. It is important to note that discontinuance of class attendance does not constitute official withdrawal. For a withdrawal to be official, the student must submit to the Office of the Registrar an appropriately authorized drop-add form. There is no charge for simply dropping a course. Withdrawal from a course after the first week of classes must also be approved by the student’s advisor. After the first week and prior to the end of the first eight weeks of any thirteen-week term, or at the end of the sixth week in any nine-week term or the end of the fourth week in any six-week term, the grade assigned will be “W” or “WF,” at the discretion of the instructor. Except for unusual circumstances, such as prolonged illness, a student who withdraws from a course later than the eighth week of class of any thirteen-week term or later than the end of the sixth week in any nine-week term or the end of the fourth week in any six-week term, will receive a grade of “WF.” Likewise, unapproved withdrawal from a course will result in the student receiving a grade of “WF,” irrespective of the date of withdrawal. Students receiving financial aid should check with the Office of Financial Aid before withdrawing from a course. (See page 213 of the College Bulletin.)
