How to change POP and SMTP settings with Outlook Express, Eudora, or Apple Mail

 Although use of an e-mail client is no longer recommended because of the advantages of Outlook Web Access and the limitations and warnings cited below, you can still use Outlook Express, Eudora, or Apple Mail to download messages to your computer by changing the old mcgraw.elmira.edu POP and SMTP addresses. The following sections show you how to modify POP and SMTP settings for the new Exchange server.

ATTENTION! For off campus access use the SMTP address provided by your service provider. Do not use pop3.elmira.edu.

Outlook Express (Windows only)
  • Choose Tools > Accounts
  • Click on your existing Elmira College POP account and choose Properties.
  • Click the Servers tab and enter the information as shown in the figure below, replacing mtwain08 with your e-mail username.
  • Make sure that My Server requires authentication box is checked.
  • Click the OK button.
Outlook Settings

Eudora
  • Choose Tools > Options (Windows) or Special > Settings (Macintosh)
  • Choose the Getting Started icon under the Category.
  • Enter the settings as shown in the figure below, replacing Real Name, Username, and Email address with your own.
  • You must allow authorization:
    • Windows - check Allow Authentication
    • Macintosh - choose the Sending Mail icon and check Allow authorization.
  • Click the OK button.
Eudora Settings

Apple Mail
  • Choose Mail > Preferences
  • Click the accounts icon
  • Under Accounts choose your existing Elmira College account.
  • Enter the settings as shown in the figure below, replacing Description, Full Name, E-mail Address, and User Name with your personal information.
  • Click the Server Settings button and choose Authentication = Password.
  • Click the OK button to exit SMTP Server Options.
  • Click OK again.
