E-mail Information for Students

 Elmira College has converted to a new mail system called Microsoft Exchange. The new system utitilizes Outlook Web Access, which offers many advanced features and functions that the previous Web Mail interface lacked. When you use Outlook Web Access, you won't have to rely on an additional client (e.g Eudora, Outlook Express) for enhanced functionality.

Outlook Web Access (OWA) - Recommended

We recommend that you use Internet Explorer for Windows or Firefox for Macintosh to check your mail from the Web. You can download guides on how to use OWA from http://webmail.elmira.edu.

  • Go to http://webmail.elmira.edu and choose the Student Webmail Log on button.
  • Type your full e-mail address (e.g. mtwain@elmira.edu) in the Username box and your e-mail password in the password box.
Attention! Each time you have finished using Outlook Web Access:
Choose the Log Off button in the upper right hand corner of the navigation bar AND Exit your Web browser.

E-mail client - Eudora, Outlook Express, Apple Mail - Not recommended
Although use of an e-mail client is no longer recommended because of the advantages of Outlook Web Access and the limitations and warnings cited below, you can still use Eudora, Outlook Express, or Apple Mail to download messages to your computer by changing the POP and SMTP addresses.

For all clients the required settings are

  • POP3 address --> pop3.elmira.edu
  • Return address --> username@elmira.edu (replace username with your actual account name, e.g. mtwain08)
SMTP address

  • on campus --> pop3.elmira.edu
  • off campus --> provided by your service provider. Do not use pop3.elmira.edu
  • Password --> type in your e-mail password as requested
Limitations and warnings
When you check e-mail with your existing client only messages in your account's Inbox on the server will be downloaded to your PC or Mac. So it is a good idea not to organize your messages into folders with Outlook Web Mail.
