Teach A Child About Business Day

Teach A Child About Business Day: The Beginnings
Elmira College (EC) SIFE believes that business-and free enterprise-form the framework of our nation's prosperity. Children need to learn about and find their place within this system. We asked the President of the United States and the Governors of every state as well as the territories of Puerto Rico, Samoa, and Guam to proclaim April 5, 1999, "Teach A Child About Business Day." This day was devoted to familiarizing children with different types of businesses and helping them establish invaluable networking contacts that may be instrumental in obtaining internships and guidance on educational goals.

"Teach A Child About Business Day" furthered the free enterprise system by increasing awareness about business operation, consumerism, professional opportunities, and the impact businesses have on daily lives. Our "Teach A Child About Business Day" proposal suggested that communities throughout America participate by way of guest speakers, field trips, games, internships as well as community service. By exposing children of all ages to the concepts of business, "Teach A Child About Business Day" opened the eyes and minds, hearts and hands to the world of free enterprise and the prosperity it offers for all.

1999 Results

In the aggregate, 633,000 saw, heard, or read about teach a child about business day.

Teach A Child About Business Week 2000
This year, SIFE International has adopted Teach A Child About Business Day, expanding it to one week in February. It is now a special competition with opportunities for SIFE teams across the world to shine in regional and international expositions. In partnership with SIFE International, we have again petitioned the President of the United States to proclaim February 6-12, 2000, Teach A Child About Business Week and have already received a proclamation from New York State Governor George Pataki declaring the designated week Teach A Child About Business Week across the state. To enhance our program this year, we have developed a series of lesson plans that will be available to business teachers across New York State. Members of the EC SIFE team were able to explain Teach A Child About Business Week and solicit the help of nearly 300 New York State Business teachers at the annual conference of Business Educators in Syracuse, New York, on November 5.
