Elmira College Welcomes the Wonderful Class of 2017

Elmira College’s President, Dr. Ronald Champagne, welcomed 321 freshmen to the College last Thursday. On Friday, 36 transfer students joined the program, bringing in a total of 359 new students for the academic year.

Two hundred seventy-two of the members of the Class of 2017 are academic honor scholars, including 24 who were valedictorians or salutatorians of their secondary school class. Forty are winners of the prestigious Elmira College Key Award, presented for more the past 79 years to exemplary secondary school students at the end of their junior year.

The newest members of the Elmira College Community hail from 26 different states, including Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Utah, Maryland, Colorado, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.

International students comprise eight percent of the Class of 2017, and come from 9 countries including the Bahamas, Ireland, Korea, Sweden, and Italy to name a few.

This brings the total number of states represented in the Elmira College student body to 35 and the total number of countries represented to 31.

Twenty-six new students join or follow family members at Elmira College this year.
