The Elmira College Women’s Soccer team
completed another successful season under first year Head Coach Liz
Masterson. Although the team finished 3-14-1,
Masterson’s squad accomplished a number of milestones
on their way to a strong finish to the 2008 season.
Competing in her last season in Purple and Gold was Captain
Ashley Barker ’09 (Lansing, NY --
Lansing), whose leadership in the forward line will be
missed. She was accompanied by
Moira Ghent ’09 (Chittenden, VT -- Berkshire
School), who cemented herself as on of the
team’s top offensive threats.
Kaitlin Krichbaum ’09 (Pattersonville, NY --
Schalmont) and
Maggie Boland ’09 (Loundonville, NY --
Shaker) will also be missed for their offensive
prowess.
The fifth graduating Soaring Eagle is defensive standout
Kathleen Appel ’09 (Parsippany, NJ --
Parsippany Hills). Her efforts earned her a
spot on the Empire 8 All-Conference Honorable Mention list.
Stepping into the leadership role were defenders
Gretchen Hawley ’10 (Batavia, NY --
Batavia) and
Chelsea Moreau ’10 (Manchester, NH --
Trinity).
Moreau is one of five players to appear in all 18
games, while
Hawley maintained her aggressive style of defense
in the 17 games she played in. The duo will be counted
on to solidify the Soaring Eagles backfield next fall.
Co-captain
Kaitlin Borrelli ’10 (New Canaan, CT -- New
Canaan) started 17 of 18 games played in Elmira
College’s midfield.
Borelli came on strong late in the season, scoring
two goals in the final three weeks of the season. Her
game winning goal, just seconds into the first half, got
EC’s offense rolling to 5-0 win over Wells
College.
Borelli will look to continue her hot streak next
season.
The Soaring Eagles leaned heavily on the talented Members of the
Class of 2011. Goal scorers
Isabel Munoz ’11 (Merrick, NY -- Sanford H.
Calhoun) and
Danielle Corjulo ’11 (Southington, CT --
Southington) combined for nine total points.
Corjulo finished third on the team with two goals
and two assists, while
Munoz added an assist and a game winning goal in
EC’s 3-2 Conference win over Alfred.
Jenna Wellington ’11 (Arkport, NY -- Arkport
Central) tied
Ghent for the team lead with four goals and eight
total points. She claimed a team best two goals in
Elmira College’s 5-0 win over Wells College, and added
a game winning goal in overtime to defeat Kings College,
1-0.
Erin Rupell ’11 (Lehighton, PA -- Leighton
Area) and
Andrea Nickerson ’11 (Friendship, NY --
Friendship Central) added quality minutes for the Soaring
Eagles’ squad.
Rupell established herself as dominant midfielder
with the ability and size to win balls for the offense.
Nickerson appeared in 12 games and claimed her
first collegiate score against Wells College to secure the 5-0 win.
Stacy Krom ’11 (Amsterdam, NY --
Amsterdam) was solid in net for the women. She
started all 18 games, logging over 1,300 minutes of
action.
Krom finished the year with two shut outs and
ranked second in the Empire 8 with 117 saves. She
registered a season high 12 saves three times and was named Empire
8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week on October 26th.
An extraordinary group of first year athletes stepped into key
roles in their first season.
Erin Pruess ’12 (Glens Fall, NY -- Glens
Falls) provided reliable play off the bench for Coach
Masterson, while midfielder
Mary Corey ’12 (Niskayuna, NY --
Niskayuna) tallied a goal and two assists in 18
starts.
Karissa Wilson ’12 (Londonderry, NH --
Londonderry) flashed signs of brilliance in relief of
Krom in net. She finished 2-2 and
shared in the shut out win over Kings College.
Cassandra Anderson ’12 (Bainbridge, NY --
Bainbridge), Brittney Fahringer ’12 (Bainbridge, NY --
Bainbridge-Guilford), and
Cassie Plimpton ’12 (Belmont, NH --
Belmont) will be looked to for experience in their second
season.
