Led by Head Coach Kathryn Augustine-Moore, the
Elmira College Women’s Lacrosse team finished 5-10 in
the 2011 season. Elmira started strong going 3-1 in their first 4
games against non-conference opponents before going 2-6 in Empire 8
play. In tight games down the stretch, EC found themselves on the
cusp of victory several times as they lost 4 games by 2 goals or
less this season.
Offensively, the Soaring Eagles were led by the trio of
Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD --
Arnold),
Jordan Donegan ’12 (Syracuse, NY --
Corcoran), and
Meghan Pass ’12 (Owego, NY -- Owego Free
Academy).
Mitchell led Elmira with 35 goals, with a total of
46 points.
Mitchell scored on 40.7% of her shots and recorded
a team high 36 ground balls, while also causing 25 turnovers and
tallying 22 defensive clears.
Mitchell was named to the 2011 Empire 8 Honorable
Mention All-Conference team in 2011, with 19 goals and 6 assists
against conference opponents.
Donegan finished 2011 with 26 goals and a team
high 13 assists. Her 39 points ranked second on the team. She also
scooped 22 ground balls on the season.
Pass also scored 26 times for Elmira. In her 15
appearances she put 53 of her 75 shots on net and recorded 14
ground balls.
Emily Zimmerman ’11 (Marcellus, NY --
Marcellus),
Sarah Ware ’11 (Georgetown, MA --
Marquette),
Samantha Risi ’14 (Coopersburg, PA -- Southern
Lehigh),
Colette O’Brien ’13
(Binghamton, NY -- Seton Catholic), and
Marki Michaels ’13 (Manchester, NY --
Midlakes) also provided offensive sparks for the Soaring
Eagles.
Zimmerman, who received Empire 8 Honorable Mention
All-Conference honors, scored 20 goals for Elmira, netting 7
against Empire 8 opponents. In 2011
Zimmerman notched 35 ground balls and 31 defensive
clears. Ware tallied 22 points for Elmira, while also grabbing 28
ground balls and an impressive 77 defensive clears.
Risi scored 16 times for Elmira, while
O’Brien and
Michaels finished with 16 and 15 points
respectively.
Elmira was led defensively by first year player
Rebecca Matturro ’14 (Smithtown, NY, --
Smithtown). The rookie talent led the Soaring Eagle
defense in Empire 8 Conference play, recording team highs in caused
turnovers and groundballs with 14 and 17 respectively.
Matturro’s efforts earned her Second
Team All-Conference Honors. She finished with 31 ground balls and
28 caused turnovers on the season.
Laura Bartus ’13 (Suffield, CT -- Williston
Northampton),
Erin Duffy ’14 (Nashua, NH -- Nashua),
Lauren Jasminski ’11 (Simsbury, CT --
Simsbury), Rory
Donahue ’14 (Trumbull, CT -- St.
Joseph), and
Anna Mae Klatt ’14 (Riverhead, NY --
Riverhead) also made contributions on the defensive end.
Bartus finished the 2011 season recording 27
ground balls and causing 19 turnovers, while
Duffy recorded 17 ground balls in her 14
appearances.
Jasminski,
Donahue, and
Klatt appeared in 15, 7, and 4 games respectively.
The net minders for the Soaring Eagles in 2011 were
Mary Kate Gellerman ’13 (Bethany Beach, DE --
Urbana),
LeAnna Presler ’14 (Livonia, NY --
Livonia), and
Julia Manemeit ’14 (Middletown, NY -- The
Winchendon School).
Gellerman was the primary keeper for Elmira, and
finished the season having started in all 14 games she appeared,
stopping 121 shots en route to a 42.6% save percentage. Gellerman
faced 370 shots, and ended 2011 with a 4-10 record. Also seeing
time in goal were
Presler and
Manemeit, who appeared in 6 and 2 games
respectively.
Emma Schepers ’13 (Elmvale, ONT -- Team
Ontario),
Jessica Reed ’12 (Geneva, NY --
Geneva), and
Marissa Drake ’12 (Schenectady, NY --
Schenectady) each played significant minutes for the
Soaring Eagles. Schepers scored 5 goals on 11 shots, while
Reed notched 4 points in her 14 appearances.
Drake finished 2011 having appeared in 15 games,
while Sallie
Wright ’12 (Horseheads, NY -- Notre
Dame), who earned Women’s Lacrosse Sportswoman
of the Year for Elmira College, and
Jessica Blinkinsop ’14 (Temecula, CA
– Great Oak) appeared in 7 and 8 games apiece.
Entering next season Head Coach Kathryn Augustine-Moore and the
Elmira College Soaring Eagles will have to replace the
contributions of fourth year players
Jasminski,
Reed,
Ware and
Zimmerman.
