The Elmira College Soaring Eagles Women’s Ice Hockey program continued their winning tradition throughout the 2009-10 season. Under the guidance of second year Head Coach Greg Fargo ’06, the team had a season of great success, recording 24 victories for the second consecutive season. EC finished the year with a 24-5-1 overall record while achieving their seventh Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division Women’s Championship. The Soaring Eagles also reached their eighth NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament in the program’s nine year history making it to the NCAA Semifinals before falling to Norwich University, 3-2. However, the Purple and Gold ended the season on a winning note by defeating Gustavus-Adolphus College, 4-1, earning Elmira College NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Third Place honors.

The Soaring Eagles proved to be a Division III powerhouse all season, knocking off the nation’s toughest competition. EC earned victories over some of this season’s highest ranked programs including RIT, Middlebury College, Trinity College, SUNY Plattsburgh, and eventual NCAA Division III Champion Amherst College. The Purple and Gold also produced an impressive 11 consecutive wins to end the ECAC West regular season and claim the ECAC West Women’s Championship.

Elmira boasted one of Division III’s most dangerous offensive units in the country throughout the season. Five players had 10 goals or more this year, while seven reached the 20 point plateau or higher. EC’s 4.83 goals per game ranked the team third in the ECAC West Conference, behind only RIT and SUNY Plattsburgh, and sixth in the entire country. On power-play opportunities the Soaring Eagles were the best in the nation. The team was able to convert 154 power-play chances into 46 goals, 29.9%, giving them the number one ranking in the nation. The Soaring Eagles defense was equally impressive as the women generated the top scoring defense in the conference at 1.28 goals per game. This also ranked Elmira sixth in the nation in scoring defense.

Fourth year defender Jamie Kivi ’10 (Green Bay, WI -- Wisconsin Wild) had a standout year for the Soaring Eagles on both ends of the ice. Kivi was selected to the 2010 RBK Women’s Hockey All-American First Team for the second time in her four year career. Kivi also represented EC on the ECAC West All-Conference First Team. In 30 games this season, the fourth year player tied for first on the team with 31 total points, 13 goals and 18 assists. Kivi’s 1.03 points per game ranked her fourth nationally among defensemen. Kivi finished her career at Elmira College with 94 total points, 25 goals and 69 assists, from her defensive position.

Captain Jenna McCall ’10 (Thamesford, ONT -- Bluewater Hawks) led the EC offense throughout the 2009-10 season. The fourth year forward finished with 31 total points this season, 11 goals and 20 assists, which tied Kivi for the team lead. For her accomplishments, McCall received ECAC West Honorable Mention honors. McCall’s 17 assists in conference play this season ranked her third among all ECAC West players. McCall concluded her career at EC with 138 total points, 54 goals and 84 assists, in 116 games played.

The trio of Lauryn DePaul ’10 (Liverpool, NY -- Syracuse Stars U19), Alex Bresler ’12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado Selects), and Jill Debus ’13 (Howell, MI -- Hartland) provided a consistent offensive attack for the Soaring Eagles throughout the season. DePaul reached the 30 total point mark with 15 goals and 15 assists this season. DePaul proved to be a clutch player for EC leading the team with 5 game winning goals throughout the year and a hat trick in the ECAC West Championship game against SUNY Plattsburgh. Bresler led the Soaring Eagles with 19 goals this season. Bresler also provided the offensive spark for the Purple and Gold’s number one ranked power-play with 9 scores. DeBus’ 26 total points, 15 goals and 11 assists, in her first season at EC ranked her second in scoring among first year players in the ECAC West. For her accomplishments, DeBus earned a spot on the 2009-10 ECAC West All-Rookie team.

Joining DeBus on the 2009-10 ECAC West All-Rookie team was first year defender Madison Johnston ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto Aeros, PWHL) and goaltender Lauren Sullivan ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Markham-Stouffville Stars, PWHL). Johnston ranked fourth in the ECAC West in defensive scoring with 20 total points, 6 goals and 14 assists. Sullivan provided outstanding play between the pipes throughout the season for the Purple and Gold. In 20 games played Sullivan posted a 15-3-1 record and 4 shutouts while logging 1170:44 minutes in net. Sullivan’s save percentage, .945, and goals against average, 1.23, both ranked number one in the ECAC West among goalies.

Elmira College was anchored by the solid core group of fourth year players, Tiffany Hart ’10 (Perth, ONT -- Perth Jr. Wings), Forward Carly Richardson ’10 (Barrie, ONT -- Clearview Stars), and Ana Steele-Norton ’10 (Kennett Square, PA -- Millbrook School). This trio provided championship level play throughout the season. Protecting a first year goal tender, the three players led EC to a number two ranking in both defensive scoring and penalty kills in the ECAC West.

Forward’s Karen Colehour ’10 (Schenectady, NY -- Albany Ice Cats U19), Caitlin Metcalf ’13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge School), Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD - NAHA), Caitlin Manahan ’12 (St. Albans, VT -- BFA, Vermont Selects), and Melanie Henshaw ’10 (Margate, FL -- North American Hockey Academy) proved to be valuable members of the 2009-10 Soaring Eagles squad. All five players logged serious minutes while providing consistent offensive production for the Purple and Gold. Each player reached double-digits in total points with Colehour, Metcalf, and Mitchell reaching double-digits in assists.

Kathryn Walker ’12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado Selects), Amber Tirri ’13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wycoming Seminary), Amanda Ritzel ’11 (Spencerport, NY -- Toronto Rattlers), Alex McPhail ’12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto Aeros), and Mary-Kate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD -- Urbana) were also highly valuable members to this year’s championship squad. Walker secured the stellar Elmira College defense throughout the season with her consistent play. Tirri gained valuable experience appearing in 28 games in her first season at EC. Ritzel and McPhail also provided consistent play seeing the ice in 27 and 29 games respectively.

First year goalies Samantha Maguire ’13 (Findlay, OH -- Findlay) and Laura Proietto ’13 (Woodbridge, ONT -- Etobicoke Dolphins Midget AA) demonstrated their talent in limited action this season. Maguire appeared in 10 games for EC recording a .915 save percentage. Proietto registered a shutout in her first game as a Soaring Eagle against SUNY Potsdam.

The Soaring Eagles lose Kivi, McCall, DePaul, Colehour, Hart, Henshaw, Richardson, and Steele-Norton to graduation.
