The Elmira College Soaring Eagles Women’s Ice Hockey
program continued their winning tradition throughout the 2009-10
season. Under the guidance of second year Head Coach Greg Fargo
’06, the team had a season of great success, recording
24 victories for the second consecutive season. EC finished the
year with a 24-5-1 overall record while achieving their seventh
Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division
Women’s Championship. The Soaring Eagles also reached
their eighth NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey
Tournament in the program’s nine year history making it
to the NCAA Semifinals before falling to Norwich University, 3-2.
However, the Purple and Gold ended the season on a winning note by
defeating Gustavus-Adolphus College, 4-1, earning Elmira College
NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Third Place
honors.
The Soaring Eagles proved to be a Division III powerhouse all
season, knocking off the nation’s toughest competition.
EC earned victories over some of this season’s highest
ranked programs including RIT, Middlebury College, Trinity College,
SUNY Plattsburgh, and eventual NCAA Division III Champion Amherst
College. The Purple and Gold also produced an impressive 11
consecutive wins to end the ECAC West regular season and claim the
ECAC West Women’s Championship.
Elmira boasted one of Division III’s most dangerous
offensive units in the country throughout the season. Five players
had 10 goals or more this year, while seven reached the 20 point
plateau or higher. EC’s 4.83 goals per game ranked the
team third in the ECAC West Conference, behind only RIT and SUNY
Plattsburgh, and sixth in the entire country. On power-play
opportunities the Soaring Eagles were the best in the nation. The
team was able to convert 154 power-play chances into 46 goals,
29.9%, giving them the number one ranking in the nation. The
Soaring Eagles defense was equally impressive as the women
generated the top scoring defense in the conference at 1.28 goals
per game. This also ranked Elmira sixth in the nation in scoring
defense.
Fourth year defender
Jamie Kivi ’10 (Green Bay, WI -- Wisconsin
Wild) had a standout year for the Soaring Eagles on both
ends of the ice.
Kivi was selected to the 2010 RBK
Women’s Hockey All-American First Team for the second
time in her four year career.
Kivi also represented EC on the ECAC West
All-Conference First Team. In 30 games this season, the fourth year
player tied for first on the team with 31 total points, 13 goals
and 18 assists.
Kivi’s 1.03 points per game ranked her
fourth nationally among defensemen.
Kivi finished her career at Elmira College with 94
total points, 25 goals and 69 assists, from her defensive position.
Captain
Jenna McCall ’10 (Thamesford, ONT -- Bluewater
Hawks) led the EC offense throughout the 2009-10 season.
The fourth year forward finished with 31 total points this season,
11 goals and 20 assists, which tied
Kivi for the team lead. For her accomplishments,
McCall received ECAC West Honorable Mention
honors.
McCall’s 17 assists in conference play
this season ranked her third among all ECAC West players.
McCall concluded her career at EC with 138 total
points, 54 goals and 84 assists, in 116 games played.
The trio of
Lauryn DePaul ’10 (Liverpool, NY -- Syracuse
Stars U19),
Alex Bresler ’12 (Golden, CO -- Colorado
Selects), and
Jill Debus ’13 (Howell, MI --
Hartland) provided a consistent offensive attack for the
Soaring Eagles throughout the season.
DePaul reached the 30 total point mark with 15
goals and 15 assists this season.
DePaul proved to be a clutch player for EC leading
the team with 5 game winning goals throughout the year and a hat
trick in the ECAC West Championship game against SUNY Plattsburgh.
Bresler led the Soaring Eagles with 19 goals this
season.
Bresler also provided the offensive spark for the
Purple and Gold’s number one ranked power-play with 9
scores.
DeBus’ 26 total points, 15 goals and
11 assists, in her first season at EC ranked her second in scoring
among first year players in the ECAC West. For her accomplishments,
DeBus earned a spot on the 2009-10 ECAC West
All-Rookie team.

DeBus on the 2009-10 ECAC West All-Rookie team was
first year defender
Madison Johnston ’13 (Toronto, ONT -- Toronto
Aeros, PWHL) and goaltender
Lauren Sullivan ’13 (Toronto, ONT --
Markham-Stouffville Stars, PWHL).
Johnston ranked fourth in the ECAC West in
defensive scoring with 20 total points, 6 goals and 14 assists.
Sullivan provided outstanding play between the
pipes throughout the season for the Purple and Gold. In 20 games
played
Sullivan posted a 15-3-1 record and 4 shutouts
while logging 1170:44 minutes in net.
Sullivan’s save percentage, .945, and
goals against average, 1.23, both ranked number one in the ECAC
West among goalies.
Elmira College was anchored by the solid core group of fourth year
players,
Tiffany Hart ’10 (Perth, ONT -- Perth Jr.
Wings), Forward
Carly Richardson ’10 (Barrie, ONT -- Clearview
Stars), and
Ana Steele-Norton ’10 (Kennett Square, PA --
Millbrook School). This trio provided championship level
play throughout the season. Protecting a first year goal tender,
the three players led EC to a number two ranking in both defensive
scoring and penalty kills in the ECAC West.

Karen Colehour ’10 (Schenectady, NY -- Albany
Ice Cats U19),
Caitlin Metcalf ’13 (Calgary, AB -- Edge
School),
Lindsay Mitchell ’12 (Arnold, MD -
NAHA),
Caitlin Manahan ’12 (St. Albans, VT -- BFA,
Vermont Selects), and
Melanie Henshaw ’10 (Margate, FL -- North
American Hockey Academy) proved to be valuable members of
the 2009-10 Soaring Eagles squad. All five players logged serious
minutes while providing consistent offensive production for the
Purple and Gold. Each player reached double-digits in total points
with
Colehour,
Metcalf, and
Mitchell reaching double-digits in assists.
Kathryn Walker ’12 (Edmonds, WA -- Colorado
Selects),
Amber Tirri ’13 (Ringwood, NJ -- Wycoming
Seminary),
Amanda Ritzel ’11 (Spencerport, NY -- Toronto
Rattlers),
Alex McPhail ’12 (Oakville, ONT -- Toronto
Aeros), and
Mary-Kate Gellerman ’13 (Frederick, MD --
Urbana) were also highly valuable members to this
year’s championship squad.
Walker secured the stellar Elmira College defense
throughout the season with her consistent play.
Tirri gained valuable experience appearing in 28
games in her first season at EC.
Ritzel and
McPhail also provided consistent play seeing the
ice in 27 and 29 games respectively.
First year goalies
Samantha Maguire ’13 (Findlay, OH --
Findlay) and
Laura Proietto ’13 (Woodbridge, ONT --
Etobicoke Dolphins Midget AA) demonstrated their talent in
limited action this season.
Maguire appeared in 10 games for EC recording a
.915 save percentage.
Proietto registered a shutout in her first game as
a Soaring Eagle against SUNY Potsdam.
The Soaring Eagles lose

DePaul,
Colehour,
Hart,
Henshaw,
Richardson, and
Steele-Norton to graduation.
