2007 Season In Review

The 2007 Elmira College Volleyball team finished the season with two major accomplishments under its belt. Head Coach Rhonda Faunce received her 417th victory of her career, placing her as number 24 in the all-time NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Record book for career wins. Also, defensively, the Soaring Eagles compiled 2009 digs, for an average of 22.57 digs per game, ranking them 17th among all NCAA Division III institutions.

Leading the way for EC was middle hitter Katie Schildwaster ’08 (Batavia, NY -- Notre Dame). In her final season with the Purple and Gold, Schildwaster led the squad with 52 total blocks, averaged one point seventy-four kills per game and 4.09 digs per game, placing her third on the squad in both categories. Schildwaster picked up Empire 8 Honorable Mention, was named the Empire 8 Sports Woman of the Year for Elmira for the third consecutive season and received a nod on the Elmira College Invitational All-Tournament team during the 2007 season.

Outside hitter Susan Clark ’09 (Cooperstown, NY -- Cooperstown) led EC in both kills with 228 (2.56-game) and in digs with 385 (4.33-game) and was named to the Elmira College Invitational and the SUNY New Paltz Hawk Invite All-Tournament teams. Clark’s numbers in the dig category placed her sixth in the conference.

Janice Embury ’10 (Perry, NY -- Perry) served as Schildwaster’s complement in the middle and recorded 2.10 kills per game and 50 total blocks. Embury picked up All-Tournament recognition at the Smith Invitational.

Chelsea Needham ’11 (Middletown, NY -- Middletown) made a strong first-season showing for the Soaring Eagles, recording 4.23 digs per game, placing her eighth in the Empire 8 and second on the team. Adding to her accomplishments this season, Needham also led the team in total service aces with 58, also for an eighth place ranking in the conference.

Finally, running the offense for the Purple and Gold were Amanda Weaver ’10 (Eaton, OH -- Eaton) and Carlie Cerne ’11 (North Collins, NY -- North Collins), who worked together to combine for 777 total set assists, placing ninth and 10th in the Empire 8, respectively. Cerne finished second on the squad with 35 services aces and also ranked fifth on the team with 2.38 digs per game.

Overall, the Soaring Eagles finished with an overall record of 10-16 and will lose Sarah Crimian ’08 (Warminster, PA -- William-Tennent) and Schildwaster to graduation.
