Women's Tennis

Now entering his thirty-third season at Elmira College, Women’s Tennis Coach Phil Levkanich came to Elmira after graduating from nearby Mansfield University. While at Mansfield, he participated on the tennis team, earning the top singles and doubles position. In his first season playing for the Mountaineers, the team finished with a 10-0 record.  In his second season, the team finished 10-1 and received a berth in the National Athletic Interscholastic Association (NAIA) national championships held in Kansas City, Missouri.

During his tenure at Elmira College, Levkanich has worked to build a strong women’s tennis program.  The 2009 campaign was headline by a 5-9 record, including a 2-1 spring season with wins over Wells College and SUNY Brockport. 

In addition, Levkanich is a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association. Aside from coaching the women’s team, Levkanich is also the Men’s Tennis Coach, and is the Murray Athletic Center Facilities Manager.

 

Men's Tennis

Men’s Tennis Coach Phil Levkanich is entering his thirty-thirdseason at Elmira College, after graduating from nearby Mansfield University. During his tenure at Elmira College, Levkanich has worked to build a competitive men’s tennis program.

In addition to coaching the men’s team, Levkanich serves as the Women’s Tennis Coach and Murray Athletic Center Facilities Manager. He is also a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USTA).

Assistant Tennis & Sports Information

Donald Sherman

Don Sherman enters his first year with Elmira College as Assistant Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach.

Sherman, a graduate of St. John Fisher College in 2008, was a four year letter winner in Men’s Tennis. During his time at St. John Fisher, Sherman was named to the Empire 8 All Conference team all four years, as well as being named the sportsman of the year in his final season. Sherman played an integral part in the team’s success where he led the team to their two best years in college history as well as their highest seed in the Empire 8 tournament. Along with his athletic accomplishments, Sherman graduated with a B.S. in Business Management with a concentration in Human Resources.

Along with his playing experience, Sherman has been teaching tennis for several years. He has been involved with the Greater Elmira Tennis Association (GETA) teaching tennis and running their summer tennis program since his secondary school years. Sherman also served as the Head Tennis Pro at the Elmira Country Club giving lessons as well as organizing tournaments.

Sherman is pursuing a master’s degree in General Management. His other responsibilities include work in the Office of Sports Information.
