Elmira Wins 5-4 Thriller Against SUNY Brockport

September 30th, 2009
Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Tennis team won a close match against visiting SUNY Brockport. Elmira only took one doubles point but still managed to win the match by taking four singles points. Tonight was Elmira College Women’s Tennis at their finest.

In doubles action, the duo of Rebecca Kingman ’11 and Alia Pyros ’10 won their second match in a row at first doubles. Kingman and Pyros were down 3-2 at one point but managed to run off six games in a row to take the match 8-3.

Alia Pyros ’10 won Elmira’s first singles point in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. She handled her opponent with ease as she returned booming shots from the baseline. Her consistent strokes and ability to win big points proved to be the key factor for her at the third singles position.

Fourth year player Desiree Calderella ’10 won Elmira’s second singles point of the day in a hard fought three set battle at sixth singles. Calderella dropped the first set 2-6 but worked hard to pull out the second set 7-5. In the final set she wore down her opponent with steady and consistent play, winning by the score of 6-2.

Second year starter Briana Palmiero ’12 earned Elmira’s third singles point by the score of 6-0, 6-3. Palmiero was never in danger of dropping a set. Her opponent never got into a rhythm due to Palmiero’s high pressure style of play.

With the overall team score tied at 4-4, the final and deciding match came down to first year player Elyse Colby ’12 at the fifth singles spot. Colby took the first set 6-4 but failed to take the second as she lost it 5-7. With the match on the line it was clear to see that Elmira was going to see what Colby was made of. In order to save time they played a super 10 point tie-breaker to decide the final set. She dominated play from the start, going up 7-3 on her opponent. Colby never took her foot off the pedal as she cruised on to victory by the score of 10-4 giving Elmira its second straight win of the season. Elmira will look for Colby to continue her success and veteran like play as they enter the final stretch of their season.

The Elmira College Women’s Tennis team returns to action on the road on Saturday, October 3rd at 1:00 pm against Empire 8 opponent Stevens Institute of Technology.
