Elmira, NY – The Elmira College
Women’s Tennis team lost a hard fought match today
against the Hawks of Hartwick College by the score of 8-1.
Aggressive play from the Soaring Eagles allowed the match to be
competitive from start to finish with two matches going three sets.
The Hawks swept the doubles matches but not without a fight.
Elmira’s first doubles team led early in their match by
the score of 4-3 before losing 8-4. At third doubles, Hartwick and
Elmira shared breaks of serve until the final two games of the
match when Hartwick finally held serve to win by the score of 8-5.
In singles action,
Alex Putney ’12 played a phenomenal
three set match at second singles. She dropped the first set 6-2
and trailed in the second set 4-3 but
Putney fought her way back to win it 6-4. The
final set was back and forth until her opponent held serve to make
the score 6-4 in Hartwick’s favor.
Putney’s gutsy performance was admired
by players and fans alike.
At third singles
Alia Pyros ’10 lost a tight match by
the score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Pyros led early in the first set 4-1 but could not
hold on to win.
Briana Palmiero ’12 played another
close match at fourth singles, losing it 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Palmiero held an early lead in the second set but
let it slip away. In the third set she was down 4-1 and fought back
to make it 4-4 but could not pull out the win.
Elmira’s lone point came from first year player
Elyse Colby ’12.
Colby dominated her match at the fifth spot,
winning it 6-2, 6-2. Her aggressive play and desire to win was in
full effect this afternoon.
Colby will be looked upon to continue her success
throughout the remainder of the season.
The Elmira College Women’s Tennis team returns to
action on the road on Wednesday, September 23rd at 4:00 pm against
Empire 8 opponent Nazareth College.
