Elmira, NY – The Elmira College
Women’s Tennis team picked up their first win this
afternoon in dominant fashion by defeating visiting Utica College
9-0. This win gives the Soaring Eagles an overall record of 1-1.
The Pioneers of Utica College came to the match missing a handful
of players giving Elmira 3 forfeit wins. At third doubles
Kit Stebbins ’12 and
Krista Dining ’12 picked up a forfeit
win. Fifth and sixth singles players
Elyse Colby ’12 and
Desiree Calderella ’10 also picked up
forfeit wins.
Elmira College’s upperclassmen led the way this evening
by picking up six points all at the top of the singles and doubles
lineup.
Rebecca Kingman ’11 was a double
winner this afternoon. She picked up a win at first doubles with
partner,
Alia Pyros ’10, by the score of 8-2.
Kingman also won a tough singles match at the
first position by the score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Pyros was also a double winner this afternoon by
picking up her other win at third singles by the score of 6-1, 6-1.
At second doubles, the team of
Alex Putney ’12 and
Briana Palmiero ’12 won easily by the
score of 8-1. The duo unloaded a flurry of powerful shots which
proved to be too much for the Pioneers.
Putney picked up her first singles win of the
season at second singles by the score of 6-0, 6-1.
Palmiero followed the trend by winning at fourth
singles 6-0, 6-0.
This decisive win for the Soaring Eagles was just what they were
looking for. They will look to carry this momentum over to
Sunday’s match, Sept. 13th at 1pm, against Empire 8
rival St. John Fisher College at the Murray Athletics
Center.
