September 12th, 2009
Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Women’s Tennis team picked up their first win this afternoon in dominant fashion by defeating visiting Utica College 9-0. This win gives the Soaring Eagles an overall record of 1-1.

The Pioneers of Utica College came to the match missing a handful of players giving Elmira 3 forfeit wins. At third doubles Kit Stebbins ’12 and Krista Dining ’12 picked up a forfeit win. Fifth and sixth singles players Elyse Colby ’12 and Desiree Calderella ’10 also picked up forfeit wins.

Elmira College’s upperclassmen led the way this evening by picking up six points all at the top of the singles and doubles lineup. Rebecca Kingman ’11 was a double winner this afternoon. She picked up a win at first doubles with partner, Alia Pyros ’10, by the score of 8-2. Kingman also won a tough singles match at the first position by the score of 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Pyros was also a double winner this afternoon by picking up her other win at third singles by the score of 6-1, 6-1.

At second doubles, the team of Alex Putney ’12 and Briana Palmiero ’12 won easily by the score of 8-1. The duo unloaded a flurry of powerful shots which proved to be too much for the Pioneers. Putney picked up her first singles win of the season at second singles by the score of 6-0, 6-1. Palmiero followed the trend by winning at fourth singles 6-0, 6-0.

This decisive win for the Soaring Eagles was just what they were looking for. They will look to carry this momentum over to Sunday’s match, Sept. 13th at 1pm, against Empire 8 rival St. John Fisher College at the Murray Athletics Center.
