Nationally Ranked SUNY Cortland Defeats Elmira College Field Hockey, 4-1

ELMIRA, NY – The Elmira College Field Hockey team
suffered its second defeat of the 2009 season to SUNY Cortland,
4-1. SUNY Cortland, ranked 9th in the nation, came out strong in
the first half recording 19 shots and scoring 3 goals against the
Purple and Gold. EC’s slow start proved to be
detrimental despite a determined effort in the second half to mount
a comeback. Elmira College fired 7 shots after halftime with one
finding the back of the net.
Jalene McCulloch ’10 (Belleville,
ONT -- Millbrook) shined again for the Soaring
Eagles, in 70 minutes of work, McCulloch recorded 16 saves to keep
the Red Dragons within reach.
In the midst of a well played second half,
Deanna Henson ’10 (Carmel, NY --
Carmel) scored the first goal of the season for the
Soaring Eagles after a perfectly executed corner play.
For SUNY Cortland, Liz DeWaters, Sam George, Brenda Semit, and
Samantha Wong accounted for the four goals scored by the Red
Dragons.
The Soaring Eagles look to build on the second half success as they
travel to Misericordia September 12, 2009 at 3:30 p.m.
