POTSDAM, NY - Second year attack
Perry Markell ’10 (Portsmouth, RI -- Portsmouth
Abbey) scored a career high 6 goals to help guide the
Soaring Eagles (2-1) to a 16-10 victory over the Golden Knights of
Clarkson University (1-2) Sunday afternoon at SUNY Potsdam.
In just two games played,
Markell has accumulated a total of 9 goals with 1
assist and currently ranks second on the team in total points with
10. Leading the team is third year attack
Sarah Young ’09 (Hampton, NJ -- North
Hunterdon) who has 10 goals and 2 assists in her first
three matches. In Sunday’s contest,
Young also had a great offensive showing finding
the back of the Golden Knights cage on 4 different occasions.
Also recording a career high performance was
Mina Schnell ’10 (Southboro, MA --
Algonquin), who managed her first career hat trick.
Schnell and
Markell each scored a free position goal as the
team ended out the afternoon 2-for-2 on free position attempts.
EC jumped to an early lead 29 seconds into the contest when the
Markell sisters connected to give the Soaring Eagles the 1-0
advantage.
Georgia Markell ’11 (Portsmouth, RI --
Portsmouth Abbey) ended the game with 3 assists and 1
goal. Clarkson’s Alicia Chace answered right back
however tying the game at 1-1 about three minutes later.
The two teams would battle back and forth throughout the first
half. EC did manage a two goal lead at the 6:58 mark when
Young scored her third consecutive goal of the
match. Clarkson would come back and score one more goal before the
halftime horn sounded.
Goalie
Erin Kendall ’09 (White River Junction, VT --
Hartford) earned a total of 4 saves in the first half
tying Clarkson goalie Jana Keller who also managed 4 saves. Going
into the halftime break, the two squads were almost identical in
total shots, with Clarkson taking a slight edge over the Purple and
Gold in groundballs.
Elmira wasted little time in the second retaking a two goal lead
less than 3 minutes in. Following the goal, the two teams were dead
locked once again scoring back and forth at will. That all changed
however as EC scored 4 unanswered goals to gain some breathing room
going into the final 18 minutes of regulation.
Clarkson did try to battle back but the distance between them and
the Soaring Eagles was too much to overcome.
Schnell recorded the team’s final goal
of the afternoon around the four minute mark.
Kendall would once again have a strong showing in
front of the cage for the Purple and Gold earning a total of 8
saves in the half for a game total of 12. Keller recorded only one
save in the final 30 minutes.
The Golden Knights would lead the second half in both shots with
15, and groundballs with 15. EC tallied a total of 12 shots and 10
groundballs in the half.
