Women's Basketball Drops Final Contest of 2007 to Juniata College

December 29th, 2007
HUNTINGDON, PA -- A combined 28 total team turnovers proved to be downfall for the Soaring Eagles (3-5) as they dropped a 75-60 decision to the Eagles of Juniata College (5-3) Saturday evening.

Juniata managed to take advantage of EC’s inability to possess the ball converting the turnovers in to a combined 35 points throughout the course of the game. The game which was the first between the two programs is the final game of 2007 for the Purple and Gold, as they get set to start the second part of their schedule next Friday.

The game got off to a rocky start for the Soaring Eagles giving up the ball in the opening seconds. It would take EC nearly three minutes to notch their first basket of the evening on a Mary Symonds ’09 (South Acworth, NH -- Fall Mountain). Symonds ended the evening shooting 3-7 from the floor, while also going 3-4 from the free throw line.

As the first half continued EC found itself in a scoring battle with the Eagles. EC managed to take their first lead of the night with about 13 minutes left to play following back-to-back baskets from Symonds and Kourtney Troutman ’08 (South Dayton, NY -- Pine Valley).

Troutman finished the evening putting up a team high 15 points, which now improves her career total to 966 career points at Elmira College.

The final ten minutes of the half saw both teams in a heated battle to take the lead before the halftime horn sounded. EC managed to hold off the Eagles for most of the half, but were only able to secure a one point lead going into the halftime break.

Following the intermission Juniata wasted little time retaking the lead and control of the game. With a good three pointer from Jill Walsh the Eagles regained the offensive momentum and completely dominated the half.

Despite many efforts from a variety of Soaring Eagle players, the Purple and Gold were unable to slow the Juniata offense as the Eagles continued to extend their lead midway through the half.

With less than 10 minutes to play EC found themselves trailing by 12 points (60-48) after Kelly Ashcraft scored a jumper from outside the paint. Ashcraft put up a game high 24 points, while also managing 9 rebounds.

As time winded down in the game, the Soaring Eagles found themselves at a loss. No matter what EC tried to do, it was not enough to topple the already secure lead the Eagles had earned.

The Soaring Eagles will look to 2008 as a new start to their season. EC returns to action on Friday, January 4th when they head to Utica, NY to face the Pioneers of Utica College in an Empire 8 conference game scheduled for 6 p.m.
