CORTLAND, NY - Second year guard
David Nelson ’10 (Bainbridge, NY --
Bainbridge-Central) scored a game high 16 points against
the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland in a non-conference matchup
Tuesday evening at Cortland, NY. Despite a tough effort in the
first half the Soaring Eagles (0-2) eventually fell to SUNY
Cortland (2-0) by the score of 84-58.
The first half would start off in favor of the Purple and Gold on
an early three point basket from
Bryan Mathews ’10 (Horseheads, NY --
Horseheads). Following the basket, EC and Cortland would
battle back and forth in hopes to take control of the game
offensively.
Going into the midway mark of the first half, EC led the Red
Dragons by one. Cortland would try to take the lead on a couple of
opportunities, but the Soaring Eagle’s defense managed
to keep the Red Dragons close, and would eventually regain the lead
and extend it to five points on a
Nelson three point basket.
Nelson ended the game shooting 3-5 from outside
the arch.
Unfortunately the lead would not last before the halftime
intermission. EC went into the locker room trailing the Red and
White by three points after Derrick Fish hit a buzzer beating three
point basket.
Following the halftime break, the Purple and Gold were unable to
find their offensive spark in the second half. Cortland took
advantage of some crucial turnovers and missed baskets on the part
of EC, and was able to extend their lead to 25 points throughout
the first 11 minutes of the half.
With less than nine minutes to play, EC was unable to stop the
bleeding as Cortland continued to apply strong offensive pressure.
With about two minutes left in the game the Red Dragons sealed the
victory taking their largest lead of the evening (79-49).
EC will return to action on Monday when they face Pitt-Bradford in
their 2007 season home opener at Speidel Gymnasium. Game time is
scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be video broadcasted on
