
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira College Women’s Tennis team
(3-6) faced off against conference opponent Rochester Institute of
Technology (8-3) in an effort to make a final push going into the
final week of the regular season. The Soaring Eagle netters looked
to carry the momentum from their win over SUNY Brockport this past
Wednesday.
In doubles action, the Soaring Eagle netters dropped all three
decisions, yet pushed the Tigers in both the first and second
spots. The duo of
Torrie Robinson-Neff ’09 (Gloucester, MA --
Gloucester), and
Rebecca Kingman ’11 (Hamilton, NJ --
Steinert) lost a hard fought match in a tiebreaker 9-8
(8-6) at second doubles. The captain tandem of
Kimmy Kellett ’09 (Binghamton, NY -- Chenango
Valley) and
Emily Talbot ’09 (Cazenovia, NY --
Cazenovia) dropped their decision 8-5 after having chances
to take leads early in the match.
The Soaring Eagles, down 3-0 looked to capture the match in the
singles competition. Leading the way was
Kingman, who won her third match in a row by a
score of 7-5, 7-5. The win today puts
Kingman’s record at 5-1 over the past
three matches at singles and doubles. Following
Kingman’s lead was
Kellett. After a close match in doubles,
Kellett regained her focus and pushed one of the
conferences top singles players, but came up short by a score of
6-1, 6-3.
Rounding out the singles was
Aradhna Taneja ’08 (New Delhi, India --
Hotchkiss School), who despite being shut out in the first
set battled back in the second set and pushed her RIT opponent to a
tiebreaker. The Soaring Eagle Netters look to build off of
today’s tough loss as they enter a crucial span in the
final week of their season.
The Soaring Eagle netters hit the road to face SUNY Oneonta on
Tuesday, October 2nd at 4 p.m.
