ELMIRA, NY – Despite another strong showing from
second year goalie
Jalene McCulloch ’10 (Belleville, ONT --
Millbrook), the EC Field Hockey team fell to the
Presidents of Washington and Jefferson College in this
afternoon’s Empire 8 contest by the score of 4-0.
The first half was a back-and-forth struggle between the two hungry
teams. The Soaring Eagles only managed to get off 6 shots in the
half, with
Shannon Desgrosiellier ’08 (New York Mills, NY
-- New York Mills) tallying 3 of them. EC’s
defense, however, prevented their foes from converting any of their
attempts. Fourth year forward Beth Kelley led the way for the
Presidents, with 7 of the team’s 16 total shots in the
first half. Both teams went into halftime break scoreless.
It was a very different story in the second half of the match
however. While EC fought against the Presidents’
relentless offensive attack, they could not stop them from tallying
22 shots, 4 of which converted to goals. The Purple and Gold still
managed to get off 5 shots in the contest despite the stifling
defense from their opponents, but it was not enough to earn the
team a win.
As a highlight to today’s match,
McCulloch once again gave an outstanding
performance in the cage. The second year goalie recorded a total of
11 saves in the first half, and 14 in the second.
McCulloch currently ranks second in the conference
in total saves with 77.
The Purple and Gold will now look to their second conference game
of the season, which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 25th
against Hartwick College. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at
Hartwick.
