ELMIRA, NY -- First year forward
Jeremy Brand ’11 (Cato, NY -- Cato
Meridian) scored the Soaring Eagles only goal of the
afternoon, as the #7 Statesmen of Hobart College (3-0) defeated the
Elmira College Men’s Soccer (1-1) team by the score of
6-1.
This afternoon’s match started with both teams playing
at a very high non-stop pace. The first ten minutes of the match
was a back and forth battle at midfield. However, around the
twelfth minute mark the Statesmen were able to capitalize on a poor
clear in EC’s defensive third. Philipp Schoeniger broke
the 0-0 tie with a bouncing volley goal from about 6 yards out.
After the goal it seemed as if though the Soaring Eagles defense
had recovered, as they began applying more and more pressure to
Hobart’s offense and midfield. EC managed to keep the
ball out of the back of their net for most of the first half. It
was not until the 30th minute mark that Hobart extended their lead
to two. Tyler Webster and Grant Morrison combined to give the
Statesmen their second goal of the afternoon, on a 2 vs. 1 play
within the Soaring Eagles goal box.
Following the halftime break, EC tried to regain its offensive
composure, but the Statesmen were able to sneak a shot past Soaring
Eagles goalkeeper
Jon DePrimo ’09 (Elmira, NY --
Southside) at the 52nd minute mark. This goal however did
not silence the Soaring Eagles, instead they were able to regroup,
and net their first goal of the match 7 minutes later. Second year
forward
Brian Haschke ’10 (Pittsburgh, PA -- Deer
Lakes) assisted
Brand’s goal on an indirect kick from
about 4 yards out.
Following the goal, EC’s defense once again stepped up,
and made some outstanding open net saves to keep the Soaring Eagles
in the match. Defenders,
Anders Ostrum ’11 (East Montpelier, VT --
U-32), and
Dane Bertha ’09 (Pittsburgh, PA -- Deer
Lakes) played very strong for the Purple and Gold in the
back field. Unfortunately their efforts were not enough, with the
Statesmen ending the game with two more goals to earn their third
victory of the season.
Men’s Soccer will return to action next Friday,
September 14th when they take on Clarkson University at 4 p.m. at
Campus Field.
