Field Hockey Kicks off Season with 1-0 Victory over Oswego
September 5th, 2007
ELMIRA, NY - In today’s non-conference game between
the Soaring Eagles (1-0) and the Lakers of SUNY Oswego (0-3),
second year forward
Deanna Henson ’10 (Carmel, NY --
Carmel) gave EC their first win of the 2007 season.
Today's win is the first in the career of Head Coach
Anna Rogers.
Henson earned the game winning goal with less than
five minutes to play in the first half. Despite being out-shot by
the Lakers, the Soaring Eagles managed to play tough defensively,
which allowed second year midfielder
Jennifer Heydt ’10 (Leesport, PA -- Schuylkill
Valley) to bring the ball up the left side of the field,
and lay a pass off to
Henson who was then able to redirect it into the
back of the Lakers goal.
Following the break at the half, EC maintained its defensive
posture holding Oswego scoreless for the entire 35 minutes. The
Lakers had many opportunities throughout the half to record the
tying goal, but second year goalie
Jalene McCulloch ’10 (Belleville, ONT --
Millbrook School) shut down the
opposition’s momentum time after time.
Today’s game was the first career start, and career
shut out for
McCulloch. She ended the afternoon with a total of
7 saves, and played a crucial role in helping the Soaring Eagles
maintain their shutout.
Along with the team’s first win of the season,
today’s victory also marked the first win in the career
of Head Coach
Anna Rogers, who took over the team earlier this
summer.
“I was very proud of the ladies this afternoon. Today
truly showed that this team has a lot of potential, and I know that
we will continue to develop and grow together,” said
Coach
Rogers.
The Soaring Eagles will return to the Murray Athletic Center this
Saturday, September 8th when they face the University of Rochester
at 1 p.m. in a non-conference game.
