Jump to a Soaring Eagles Team:

Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short

January 22nd, 2007
lmira, NY – Third year guard Joe Canori ’08 had a game high 23 points as the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College defeated the Soaring Eagles 60-68 in the second game of this evening’s double header.

The first half proved that tonight’s contest would be a close one, as neither team could extend their lead into the double-digit mark. EC led by as much as 6 points at the 6:14 mark after a quick jump shot by first year guard KC Mendez ’10. However, the Soaring Eagles could not maintain this advantage, and the Flyers took the lead for good after two free throws by third year center Tyler Smith ’08 with 8:18 remaining in the half. Although EC kept the score close, Rayvon Higdon ’10 hit a buzzer-beating three point shot from the corner to put Nazareth up 32-28.

EC opened the second half on a positive note with a long jump shot in the lane by first year guard Bryan Mathews ’10. However, the Soaring Eagles endured a four minute drought in which they were unable to score a field goal. EC soon found themselves down 38-55 with 10 minutes left to go in the half with which to make a comeback. The Soaring Eagles used this opportunity well, as first year forward David Nelson ’10 started what would be a 12 point run with his long three pointer with 9:36 left on the clock. Nelson also scored another crucial three point basket to bring the Soaring Eagles back within two points with four minutes left to go.

Unfortunately for the Soaring Eagles, they would never retake the lead due to Nazareth’s discipline on defense which led to three crucial turnovers within the last three minutes of regulation.

Nelson and Mendez had 13 and 12 points respectively, and first year forward Palen Anderozzi ’10 added 9 rebounds in the losing effort.

EC will next head to St. John Fisher for an Empire 8 conference game on Friday, January 27th at 8 p.m.
