Nazareth's Late Run Not Enough to Topple Women's Basketball
January 22nd, 2007
Elmira, NY - Second year guard
Marcia Coakley ’09 scored a team-high
18 points, and third year guard
Kourtney Troutman ’08 added 10 points
and 11 rebounds as the Elmira College Soaring Eagles continued
their winning ways with a 67-62 victory this afternoon in a closely
contested Empire 8 women’s basketball game against the
Golden Flyers of Nazareth College.
The victory, Elmira’s 5th consecutive, did not come
easily. This is due mainly in part because of the stifling defense
of Nazareth College, which kept the Eagles to 6-for-37 shooting in
the first half. While Elmira scored the first basket of the game,
they soon found themselves in a gap early as Nazareth took off 3
minutes into the game on a 17-4 run capped by consecutive baskets
by first year guard Kelly Dunne ’10.
However, EC quickly found its groove, and settled into a preventive
defense of its own, causing Nazareth to commit 15 turnovers, and
allowing themselves the chance to battle their way back into the
game. The Soaring Eagles did just this by going on a 14-2 run over
the last five minutes of the half, with fourth year forward
Britta Anderson ’07 scoring two big
free throws with 3.4 seconds left, and were down only 25-24 going
into the locker room.
EC’s strong play continued in the opening minute of the
second half, causing Nazareth to commit 3 turnovers, and scoring 4
points in the process. It seemed like the Soaring Eagles had
control of the game, going on another long scoring run, featuring
several driving lay-ups by Coakley, to go up 35-27. Nazareth
College fought back though, and the game was soon tied up at 45
with 10 minutes to go. The second half saw 4 ties and 6 lead
changes in a dramatic back-and-forth finish as the Soaring Eagles
looked to be in control after a big three pointer from the top of
the key by third year forward Bridget Catanese ’08 to
go up 65-60 with 55 seconds left.
The Golden Flyers struck right back on a short jumper by Stephanie
Bowens ’07. On the ensuing possession, Troutman took a
long three pointer, which bounced off the rim, but hustled into the
paint to grab her own rebound, keeping the possession alive and the
clock running. This turned out to be the winning play for EC, as
they ultimately went on to win 67-62 in a defensive battle that
featured a total of 24 steals and 40 turnovers.
The Soaring Eagles will now face St. John Fisher College on
Friday, January 26th. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at
St. John Fisher.
